Question Baby monitors?

Does anyone keep a baby monitor in the barn to keep an eye on kidding activities? If so, what's the best baby monitor that has a wide range and will go through metal barns? I'm thinking of putting one of the video ones in ours, but need one with about 100' range and our barn is metal, so that's a consideration too. Any thoughts?

Yes I bought the Summer infant baby touch video one, it was a little more than i wanted to spend but because we had it I knew something was up last night, although I didnt have that doe in the pen and I had the camera facing the pen. It is color goes 400ft we have it in a metal barn, you can move the camera from inside the house and zoom in, and even push a button and talk, so when I got to the barn this morning I was able to tell my husband what to bring out and he was able to talk to me, you can also hook it to you tv so you can watch it bigger than on the portable screen which is about the size of a cell phone. you can also buy extra camera and that is what we are looking for now, but we arent sure if they are even available yet, after last night (this morning) I was glad that i had this one, as I have been able to lay in bed and watch the mama with her new baby. It was $249 at target but I think I will get my moneys worth. They have a 90day return policy we asked just in case we didnt like it.

Pygmybabies, when you say it goes 400 feet, do you mean it has 400 feet of wire or is it wireless and can transmit up to 400 feet?

What if you have no light in your barn at night, can you see anything? I want one but I need to do a little research first.

I've used a regular cheapo baby monitor from a store that sells used baby clothes and supplies. It works great BUT we have nubians...so at first I ran out there a lot until I realized those girls are all about "oh, oh, oh, grunt, moan, grunt, cud, cud, cud". They don't shut up even when they're sleeping!

That's the one I was looking at. The one I was looking at has an LCD monitor along with the handheld. I was just wondering if there were ones that were better. I found it on Amazon.com for $149. I might go with that one.

It has night vision, so yes you can see in the dark, and it is wireless, we can just barley get a signal cause our house isnt that close to the barn, but I get it in the kitchen and the bedroom. My goats are quiet all night long everynight since we got it last week. Thats why at 145 this morning I knew something wasnt right, and like I said I didnt have 2 cameras, i had this one in the barn, and the goat that had the baby was in the pen in the lean too, which by the way is very sheltered, just some snow blew in a bit from the blizzard...

Here is a picture of the the part of the monitor that you watch, It is about the size of a cell phone, this is it sitting in my kitchen window, I got the best reception there and it is loud so I can here it in my office, then I hook it to TV in kitchen and can see it on a bigger screen, not as clear though, and in black and white.

Thank you for the info and the picture. Think I'll get one of those. I have a doe right now that is very pregnant and not acting right. I'm worrying about her. It's extremely cold out and she wouldn't even get up to eat her grain which is VERY unusual for her since she's herd queen and always pushes everyone else out of the way. I don't think she acts like she's in labor particularly, just won't get up, but she's eating while she's laying there. I'm debating whether or not to bring her inside and warm her up. This is one of the times when a monitor would come in VERY handy.

Hi 6e, Sounds like something isn't right. I would vote for warming her up and offering baking soda, sometimes different foods can really upset their stomachs and warming her up would just rule out the cold. Even though our barn set up isn't the greatest everyone has made it through all right and we even had our first baby of the year this morning. I don't think continued laying down in this weather is good...too easy to freeze or decrease circulation to the feet. Hope everything turns out okay.

Last year my neighbor came up with a brain storm for me when my goats were about to kid. He had an old camcorder..(think shoulder type, dinosaur size). He set it up in my barn and ran a cable to the house and hooked it up to an old tv. It worked perfectly, and still does this year. I can look over my shoulder from right here and view the happenings in the barn. As I type this, my 2nd freshener has really bagged up and has been pawing the bedding, just no goo yet. And I can see it all for free.

She's up and running around this afternoon and back to being top dog at the trough. Strangest thing.
