Another disbudding question, swelling
OK so my nigerian babies are 1 week old today. I could feel the buds. Everything I read said this was a good time to do it. I have a 30x disbudder and even though it looks big it seems this is what people use for nigies. So today I disbudded them, around 11 am. I did the buck first. His buds were bigger but his head smaller. Nice copper rings, a little clear seepage from the outside of one burn but looked good. The doe came out perfectly, copper rings and no skin problems around the burn.
Around 5 I notice both have swelling of the upper eyelids. Buckling worse. They are acting normal but looks scarey of course. I suspect they will be fine by tommorrow but of course now Im wondering. What did I do wrong? Were they too young? Was the iron too big? I am pretty sure the iron wasnt on too long, maybe 6 seconds each side with the iron placed in the middle for 2-3 seconds.
Is this common on the small guys, or what should I do different next time?
I do have baby asperin if that is usefull. I can get dex tomorrow if needed.

Some of ours swell up, some don't. If they swell it seems to take about four days to go down completely. DH puts the iron on for about six seconds. We use the small tip (we've used both the X50 and X30) and then put an ice pack on the area for about a minute. We've never given them aspirin or anything else, so can't help you there.

I was going to do it twice, because thats what I do on the full size kids I raised for the freezer before. But, they had perfect copper rings the first time. Do you think I will have scurs even though they look good? I had a nigie buckling I disbudded last year, waited to long and he had 1/4 inch horns, had to burn for the 6 seconds twice, and he only has a small scur. He didnt even have as a nice a copper ring as these babies. Ive never done any so small so kinda freaked me out.
Kinda funny the first time I did one (alpine) I didnt realize the horn cap would pop off the way it did. For a second I thought I was too deep and the brain was spilling out. Of course he was fine and had a nice smooth head as he headed for freezer camp.

My disbudder does my Nigie kids at a week old. They always seem too small to me, but he does not want them to have erupted buds as he says it is harder on them. When I found him I had a 17 day old and man it was hard on him I could hear him screaming all the way to my car and my fingers were in my ears! So I defer to his judgement and take them in at a week old.
He does not do a copper ring. He burns, pops off the cap and then does it for a few more seconds on each side. I only have scurs on a couple of the wether boys, tiny ones that get knocked off in play.
So I bet yours won't scur.
Anyway I give them each 2 ccs of kids tylenol, spray their little heads with Furall, tell them I am sorry and put them back in the car Whether or not that makes them feel better, it does not matter, it makes me feel better

Well I bought it at my feed store, my current one is getting low so a few months ago so I bought a new one, still have not use it.
Since you asked that I did an internet search and they no longer sell it Some said fire at the warehouse and others claimed it caused cancer.
I am going to go back to the feed store this week and see if they have anymore, if they do I am buying it. If they don't I better hold onto this new one!
Is there anything similar?

wound coat works as well. Furall was taken off the market because "they" finally proved it cause more harm to humans than to benefit livestock however the cream is still on the market, at least that was what I was told buy our "buyers"

I heard that the factory burned down. I have not come across anything that works as well. *sigh* If I were you, going back to that feed store, I'd buy all they had.

well the swelling was completely gone by this a.m. and the buds look good. Guess all I can do now is wait to see if scurs form. Ha.
