I need help!
We bought 4 goats on Saturday. Well, today one had a baby! We were totally unprepared. The mom refused to feed the baby. My husband milked her and we are giving him that milk by syringe. My problem is the baby has not pooped. He has peed but no poop. I don't know what to do this is our first time to have goats. Please help!

How much milk has he had? I dont think mine had pooped right after they were born. How old is he at least 24hrs? try taking tissue paper and gently rub it on his butt simulating mom licking and it may make him go.
The first poo will be black and then the more milk he takes in the poo will become yellow in color.

Hi, welcome to the goat forum! I have sheep and not goats so don't offer kid advice. Someone will be here to help you shortly, I am sure. They are very nice people.
At the top of this forum there are some "sticky" topics that stay at the top. The bottom one is called Newborn Kid Care and you may want to review it.
Stay calm and be glad you are there to help this doe and her kid. They are lucky to have you.
I will alert you that goat pictures are always popular here, especially babies. You can get help posting photos, too.

He has had about 4oz since 3:00. He was born at 1:00 this evening. I guess I'm freaking out because I didn't expect to have a bay this soon. I thought I would have some time to figure it all out. Thank you!

If the kid looks full term use a bottle to feed him. You can use either a soda bottle with a black lambs nipple that feed stores or hardware stores sell OR..just use a regular baby bottle with a baby bottle nipple. After 30 years of raising goats I realize that a regular baby bottle with nipple works very well. Check the goat sites for more info but make sure the little guy gets feed a few ounces every 3-4 hours and kept warm. If Momma won't stay with him to keep him warm either put him into a pen with a heat lamp a baby sweater on him or better yet bring him inside your house. I have been know to actually put the little goat in bed with me to keep them warm and to keep them company. Just like a human baby..food, warmth and comfort. Check to see if his little bottom is clean because if his poop gets hard on his bottom he won't be able to push his BM out. He'll have a BM soon I'm sure. Possibly the Momma is so upset on being moved that she isn't interested in the little goat. That might change as time goes on. Good Luck with him and welcome to the wonderful world of goats !!

Get a soda bottle, fill with mom's milk, put a black lamb nipple on it and let him get a good meal. He needs more in him than what he has had so far. Like has been stated above, keep him warm.

If she were mine, I would put that baby in a "small" pen with its mother and I would stay in there with them. I would tie her up (easier if you have another person helping) long enough for the baby to nurse and I would force her to let that baby nurse. Then I would untie her & stay in there long enough to make sure she was not going to harm the baby.
My thinking is the dam is uncertain and frightened and they simply need time to bond.

This is an excellent idea and good advice. Since you are very new and unprepared for the baby, getting momma to raise baby is the best thing.

Update: We made it through the night! I feed the baby 2oz every 3 hrs. He made a big mess in my bathtub Now if he could figure out how to suck a bottle. We tried to put him with momma and he chased her for 30 mins crying she just ran from him. If he did manage to get under her, she tried to kick him! We found out this was her first baby and she's not quiet a year old. I guess now I know why that man was in such a hurry for us to come pick them up! We have been milking her (someone holding her down while the other milking) and giving that to him by sryinge.

It sounds like you are doing well.
You'll need to worm the mother because kidding seems to trigger an explosion in worms.
Also, what are you feeding her?
I find that by holding my goats even when they resist calms them down after a few times. They start to realize that I'm not there to hurt them. It helps to give them treats like crackers or raisins. I would make sure to hold her for a bit after you're done milking her and finish with a treat she likes.

You have to tie up the mom, restrain her, and point the kid at the teat. Stick the teat in his mouth. Every few hours. For a couple of days.
Or, be stuck bottle feeding.

I was thinking the exact same thing! Momma may just be a little confused as to all what is going on, new home, new humans, new baby! Aaaack!

A Black, I feel certain you mean well; but what you are doing is asking that baby to bond with you instead of bonding with its mother. How is that doe ever going to learn if you don't let her?

Put them together in a 4 X 4 pen so she cannot run away.

We put them in a very small pen. I really just want to do the best for the baby. How long can I leave him out there with her if he's not eating? He hasn't had anything since 6:00 this morning it is 11:00 now. If I leave them long enough will she take care of him?

You can't just LEAVE him and expect it to work. YOU MUST RESTRAIN HER and help him find the nipple and suck.
The sucking and how he smells to her creates the bonding.
YOU MUST HELP and be SURE he sucks, not just hope it happens.
WORK ON IT.

Ain't that just like a goat? So many people here on kid watch begging their does to kid, and here these people are totally unprepared and unaware, and a kid is born.

Thanks everyone for the help and replies. I think we are going to be ok. He is in the pen with his mom. He's still not eating from her but he is sucking a bottle.
