Hoof Rot?

One of our recently acquired Boer does has some gnarly looking feet(chipped up real bad and leaning weird on one). So we led her into the stanchion and gave them an up close and personal inspection. Trimmed up any pieces that folded under the hoof(forming pockets). Overall, her feet were not long at all. But there were areas on them that were soft and black and smelled of thrush(like what horses get) you know that lovely smell of death in the hoof. She had it in all four hooves, some worse than others.

Googled hoof rot and most people said to expose the area, trying to get down to good tissue. So I did and afterwards I lathered her feet in Copportox(sp?) the same stuff you would put on a horse's hoof who has a case of thrush.

Am I on the right track? So they get thrush for the same reason as horses? The pasture is sandy and bone dry, they do venture down into the woods which are a little more moist, but they prefer being up in the pasture on their playground equipment.

I had hoof rot on one of my girls. I went rounds with copper tox. I ended up using tripple antibiotic ointment with an antibiotic powder mixed(oytetricycline) in and it was gone in just a few days. We had flooding very bad here and our ground never seemed to dry. If I have to deal with it again I will use the ointment antibiotic ointment combo again. Plus its much cheaper.

Yes, it's pretty much the same as horse thrush. Yup, I know that smell.

I use Koppertox, too.

Copper bolus the goats, too, for hoof health.

Thanks.

I will look into the copper bolus. Shes due any time in the next few weeks. We don't have a breeding date on her, but goodnes she has to be getting close with as wide as she is.

So wet here, we went through a round of hoof rot, but very briefly. Caught it pretty quick. Have to hand it to the gal at our local TSC... when I explained the problem, she recommended Dr. Naylors Hoof & Heel. She further explained that HER store didn't carry it, (but the store up the street did!). We went with her advice. It cleared up in about 2 or 3 days tops. It was gone by the time the vet made an inspection to confirm. Apparently is a common problem in our parts.

We've used wound spray with gentian violet in it, or just liquid gentian violet when we can find it available locally on our horses feet when they'd had thrush. Although we have to wear disposable gloves and it's messy, it's the best we've found. No problems with our goats, but would definitely use the same thing if they had thrush or hoof rot.

If the inside of your milk house is painted white, do not apply Koppertox or gentian violet on the milk stand in the milk house.

Don't ask me how I know.
