Selling Raw Milk...

We are in KS and it is legal to sell raw milk off the farm here. I had a friend of a friend contact me yesterday about purchasing some of my milk. Since I have 8 girls freshening in a month, I will probably have lots of extra milk this year.

I am, however, reluctant to sell milk... It is good and I keep my milking room clean, all my jars clean, chill quickly, etc. (after all, I don't want to pass disease to my family, either). I am just one of those people who imagine the worst.

I am open to thoughts and suggestions.

I had considered having this nice lady sign a letter that she was aware of the risks associated with consuming raw dairy products and that she was aware that the milk I sold her was ungraded and raw. (That has to be on the bottle, anyway).

Thanks for your input!

Thanks! Any suggestions on other places for info on this? I know there is a Raw Milk forum out there & a legal defense association? Did I see that on a thread here?

Ditto on Farm To Consumer Legal Defense Fund. They have forms for you to use, and you need to become a member of their organization.

It is a tad expensive, though: About $100/yr.

ouch! But, probably worth it... Internet is slow tonight - so I haven't checked on any of these. I plan to do that tomorrow. If I want to sell raw milk, it would be worthwhile for the peace of mind...

Check with your Dept of Agri.
You might need a permit. That would insure you are following all the regs. Some you might not have thought about. Here in NY they test the milk all for free. It is a wonderful tool to be able to tell potential buyers that the Dept of Agriculture has tested it for safety. Also if anyone were to get sick the Dept of Agri will attest to the fact that you were doing everything right. And they would have records to prove it.
