Which Tattoo Kit?

Which size of tattoo is the best for use on LaManchas? This will be the first year I have registered kids born here and I am getting ready to order a tattoo kit but I don't know which one to get. Do I get the 300, the 5/16, or the 3/8? Do I want it with or without a release? What about revolving? One that can hold 4 digits or 5 digits?

last year we bought a tattoo gun (like they use on people) got it on ebay for like
450 with free shipping. we do all our tatts on the lamanchas in the center tail web. we use a marker to write out the letters and numbers on there then start tattoing. i hold the goat between my legs, tail up, and my freind holds the back legs. it works fast and easy and you can read the tattoos very easly, judges love it!

You can buy tattoo 'pens' for rabbits for way, way, way less than 450.00! They work the same as the ones for humans, just much cheaper. For the clamp style, I think they are supposed be the 5/16 for La Manchas. I use the 3/8" in ears.

I was planning on using the clamp style out of the Jeffers catalog and if you use 3/8 for the ears then 5/16 sounds right. Thanks!

Yeah! I would like that, too!! I used the clamps on my rabbits last year and it didn't turn out very well at all. I didn't get the ink into tattoo. Was afraid to do the goats until I learned more....

I am very interested in this subject as well. I am looking at doing my first Tattoos this year. Is there a preference in the ring? I mean of course if it's legible they aren't _supposed_ to take lots of things into account-- but I have seen beautiful Boxers miss a placing because they didn't have their ears clipped (no longer necessary in the standard).

The tattoo gun/ pen pic looks just fine on the tail web, does it work as well in ears? I have a 'kid box' to help with holding them for disbudding/worming/tattooing but the clamps were looking good for speed.

i have done some nigerian ears with the gun, and they come out fine. my freind who raise nidgies is going to have me tattoo all her nidgies from this year in their center tail web, like we do the lamanchas, so when the judges need to check their tattoos it will be easier to just lift the tail that have to fit them to see in the ears.
before we used the gun to tatto the lamanchas tails we used the clamp and not allways did it turn out were you could read it easy. we havent had any we cant read using the gun.

Thank you so much for posting that. Off to look for a gun. That will save having to buy a bunch of letters and such too. Can you post a link to a gun like you have so that we can see what it looks like, that way we don;t go buying the wrong thing? Also, is it difficult to get them to hold still? Is like the tattoo guns used on people?

i cant get the link to coppy and past. but if you got to ebay, look up seller tattoo parts, they are out of florida. i got the journeyman 1 says it is a complete tattoo body art kit tattoo set lcd pro gun usa

i have not tried tattooing by myself, always have a helper. i sit in a chair (we ussually tat the kids in the kittchen, i can see good (better light than the barn)and kitchen chairs are comfy) i lift the back legs of the kid up and put them between my legs. tail up, and then wrap one leg around kid a bit to keep them from bouncing up. and then my helper holds the back legs. i hold tail with my left hand and tattoo with my right, i am right handed. scares them a bit at first but then they calm down. hard part to get used to is using foot petal to start and stop gun, but now i am used to it, had to tell my foot what my brain wanted. when i get done i wipe off extra ink with wet wipe to make sure i can read it well. then put little bit of vasaline on it.
i do all mine in the center tail web, since you are not clamping you dont have to worry about paralizing them and it gives you a bigger area to write. i use a sharpie marker to write out what needs to be on the tail first then just trace over it.

Thank you so much! Now, how the heck do you use ebay? *sigh* Okay eventually I am going to have to conquer ebay. All previous attempts have been failures, but I know more about computers and the internet now than I did the last time I tried.

Okay, never mind, Ebay remains beyond me. I looked on Amazon but couldn't find anything for less than 500.00. That sucks moldy moose meat.

edited to add: okay I think I might have figured it out and found one that will work. I can't find the one you posted, but there are a lot of others in that price range.
