Are These Normal?

So i was just looking up different breeds of goats for the fun of it when i came across this page, is it just me or do the goats on this site look overly large?

http://www.holdbrookherd.co.uk/forsale.html

I've never seen goats that large before, some of them look like the girls standing next to them could jump on and go for a ride! Sheesh!

My Saanens are pretty tall and I know that they are a breed that has been commonly used for draft purposes. Also... keep in mind their arms are out in front of them, creating a bit of an optical illusion and finally, we don't know how tall the humans are... I mean a 6 ft tall person might make them look tiny and who knows? Maybe these girls are short?

They appear to be between 3 and 4 ft tall at the shoulder, based on comparing them to the brick wall behind them, and guessing the hay is standard 4 ft bales

Those do look a bit bigger than our Nubian bucks were, but then since all we have are little ND guys here right now maybe I'm disremembering!

WOW. Those do look like big ones!
There is a guy not too far from here that I met one day at a parade. He raises Boers, and is big into the meat goat promotion associations, etc.
He had a Boer wether hitched to a cart that was the size of a pony! Not a Miniature, but a small riding pony!
Definitley got a lot of attention for his meat goat herd.

They are probably decent sized goats, but I bet most of it is a trick of the camera. I have a friend who shows Great Danes and her win picture makes her boy look enormous....but in reality he was on the short side for a dog, standing at 33" at the shoulders...

I have a wether who comes up to just above my hip, so he's at least 36" at the shoulders. I could see a big buck being taller than that.

Are These Normal? - Goats

I simply ask why? This thread made me and a friend start talking about large goats. But this thing is not attractive..

They are obviously large goats but probably not as large as they appear to be. Kind of like my goatzilla photo...Benny is a big goat, but not this big:

That website made me laugh. Those goats look huge to me. I have nigerian dwarf, mini lamanchas and a few bigger goats but nothing near as big as these goats look.

I wish there was a link to Cold Comfort Hawthorne's sire Nu-Ara's Sidney Chinsucker. He was a massive Nubian buck. My very best Nubian doe was a CC Hawthorne daughter. She was a big old doe and gave the best milk I have ever had the pleasure to drink.

Mature males of the standard dairy breeds grow to be very tall if fed properly. It appears that these are well fed mature bucks handled by a very petite lady.

I would think the women are not too tall but like saanengirl said muture well fed bucks I've seen are pretty big.

We went to a farm for rabbits a couple years ago & the owner had goats as well, he asked did we want to see his bucks & of course we did. One was Nubian & the other an alpine cross. I noticed the hot wire around the fence but didn't see the bucks but there were lots of trees.

When we walked in that penned are & these 2 massive looking bucks come up the hill from some trees I thought I should start running for the gate. I am 5 foot 8 inches & these guys were big. He had bottle fed both & raised them, they were both very friendly & no problem at all to pet.
I have Nigerians & had never seen goats so BIG! They were huge!

They look normal/good sized Nubian bucks to me.
I have a Nubian wether whose head come up to my boobs and I am 5'4". He can sniff my face if he stretches his neck a bit. He is off the weigh tape by a few inches lol. Not fat just a big boy, bottle fed and wethered by 8 weeks old. Not sure if he was a buck how much bigger he would have gotten
Thankfully he is very sweet but does not notice when he is standing on your foot, darn that can hurt!

Our wether kids were sired by a descendant of Sidney Chinsucker. Their sire isn't that big of a goat himself, and their dams aren't very big either. For which I'm glad. Smaller goats = less food consumed. Hondo's the biggest goat on the place, not sure how tall he is though. Have to measure sometime. Should do that soon, because he's still got a year or so to put on more size.

But yeah, those look to be some big ole boys there.

Okay, just took a tape measure with me to the pre-bedtime barn check, and Hondo is 33" tall at the withers. He'll be two years old on Feb 8th. Could get taller I guess. Dunno if he has any Sidney Chinsucker in his ancestry, I have very little patience for digging through the ADGA online pedigree database. *shrug*

Mostly putting this here for my own records, so I can come back later and see how tall he was on this day.

He will grow for at least another year, two more is very likely.

First they grow up.
Then they grow long.
Then up.
Then long.
Finally they grow wide.

Oh wait.... It's just like me. I won't mention what way I'm growing now. :happy0035:

Folks that like the pygmies (aka "yard ornaments" lol) can have 'em. I like my goaties B-I-G, for pack-companions. *( that was with a wink, as I do love all goats but i have a soft spot for the biggies.)

Alpines-especially Alpines, and some Saanens and Nubians can get really tall. I absolutely love big tall goats. I gave a saanen wether away that was 37 in at the withers at age three so he wasn't near done growing yet. Goats never totally stop growing I guess. I have had big laManchas and shorties out of the same lines, so??? My current Saanen is 6 yrs old and is 36 at his wither. He regularly reaches up and can touch my chin. Since he knows I am the herd queen/boss..he never threatens me or challenges. Quite the opposite. He loves to lay down in the shade, on my blanket and put his head in my lap for a poll scrtichy scratch, or offer a leg to me LOL. Bottle babies have that trusting-friendly side ( not to mention acting a bit spoiled too).

Oh...and there is a packgoat "Riding" saddle available for small children only, who grow tired while hiking. A friend had one for her children who rode the gentle giant saanen/alpine/boerX wether she raised who weighed way over 300 Lbs..and stood as tall as a pony. He's a big puppy-sweet boy, that likes to protect his owner from whatever he thinks is a threat.
