Clostridial Perifrigens?

Not me, I vaccinate with CD & T.

I work in a Resturaunt & everyone knows me as the goat lady, Not that I know that much at all but anyways a good customer & her husband were in for lunch yesterday & said their grandkids goat was sick & had been down since Tuesday afternoon or evening.

I guess they called their vet & she never seen the goat but said it was Clostridial Perifrigens & to give him the CD Antitoxin, Nuflor & Banamine which they did. The vet never came out & they never called them again. They did not vaccinate either.

Anyways I had the customor write down the daughters phone number & said I would go over there after work if they wanted me too & not sure I could do anything but I would look him over, he was still alive at that time.

I called them when I got home, yes they wanted me to come over. I got together everything I had that I could think of just in case & by the time I got their the goat had just passed away.

They wanted to cut him open & see if they could tell what was wrong. I told them the intestines would be purple from bleeding inside, was I correct?

they called me later last night because I wanted to know what they found & they said they were purple & full of blood.

My question is can anything else cause this? We have freezing cold temp's & have for months & quite a bit of snow. I know that clostridial is a micro organism in the soil. Is it possible this goat got it even though the cold temp's & frozen ground?

This mother was afraid to let her kids around the goat & wants to sanitize evrything(They had brought him in the basement since Tuesday). I told her I didn't think Clostridial was anything their kids could catch.

Of course the kids want another goat & I think they may come over in the spring & look at my babies & also told them how important the vaccination was & how cheap it was. I told them I would even draw it up & give it to them or the kids grandmother.

Just thought if there was more info I'd like to tell them as they felt really bad & were worried about the safety of their kids.

I forgot to tell you I still looked him over because they wanted to know what else it could have been & of course he was already dead but I looked at him anyways.

No snot around the nose, the eye membranes & gums looked nice & pink although they said they never wormed him, there were no crystals around his wee wee on his belly since I was thinking stones. Didn't take a temp at that point of course & they never did before.
I din't know what else to look at or tell them.

No info to offer, but interested in others' take on this.

It's very good of you to take the time to educate these folks on the care and management of goats. You are helping to build a more goat-friendly world.

Thanks Pony but I didn't really do anything. I had just been thinking about this all night & feeling bad for them & thought about our cold temp's & frozen ground, etc. was thinking the vet could be wrong? Maybe they carry the micro- organism awhile before any damage done? Just all guesses by me at this point.
