Themes for Baby names
I am trying to come up with a theme for all the babies born at our little farm this year. I dont know wether to go with a movie or like disney or a letter of the alphabet. I would like to hear what some of you have come up with,
We now have 2 GP that are names Trinity and Neo from the Matrix, and if we ever breed them, they will have Matrix names while they are with us.

a yearly "theme" would be a great way to keep quick track of who was born when, I would think.

Totally agree. Last year we had flower names, even the bucklings had (and were registered) with flower type names..Wes for Wisteria, Clem for Clematis .
The baby girl was Cherry Blossom..I love to follow a theme, especially if it follows the parents.
Disney names to me are over used, that's just IMO, seems like every one has at least one Disney themed animal running around!!
I am going to follow the does names with the kids myself, although 'Moon Beam" may have some interesting named kids..Hmmm...
And Zydeco, that is a form of American Folk Music..hmmm... that could go many direction!!
I love figuring out Baby names!! I am planning on keeping one of Zy's does, so it will have to be a great name...hmmmm

If I have it right, I believe our breeder christened each year's generation by alphabet... example: first year, all names started with "A", next year "B" and so on. Easier to keep track of which generation belonged to which year, and broadened the name pool quite a bit. Get's fun when you get to "Q" or "Z" I imagine.

I don't follow a theme. I always name my goats with people names & none of them match really.
Last year though we had 4 little bucks born, 2 sets of twins & I named them Walker & Ranger, Striker & Booker. Then someone gave us a buckling & we named him Fisher.
We sold Ranger & Striker & I may sell one of the bucklings from last year this year as well or Fisher.

I name my Saanens with names relating to music or the performing arts or art periods. Occasionally one will get a name relating to philosophy. My Guernseys receive names from Greek mythology. Right now I have three Saanens named: Mazurka, Shadow Dancer, and Rhapsody, and two Guernseys named: Pandora and Prometheus.

I dont have themes for the goats, but we do for the cows and for my rabbits. All rabbits (well my tans) began with song names. I have tiny dancer, cha-cha, country man, pandora, nightmare, locomotion, lonely road of faith, celebrate good times, shot-in-the-dark, foghat, etc...It just goes on and on.
Now, I name my tan litters by a theme of the moment, for example, one litter was moonbeam, 321 blast-off, comet, asteroid, and black hole, that started because the next ear number in sequence was 321.
I have an 8 week old litter that are indian corn, field corn, popcorn, and sweet corn.
You have to do it this way, because they all look the same. Its really hard to come up with 50 or 100 names a year for a black rabbit..sheesh!
Now the cows, on the other hand, are named by family groups. For example, we had this cow named april and we called her ape, so all her descendents are apes...crazy ape, red ape, white-faced ape, darkie ape, grape ape, wonder ape.
we also have a highlander group, in which the elder one looks like the grandfather lion on the kids show read between the lions, so her family group is sad lion, short lion, angry lion, and joy lion. Short lion just calved this morning, so there will be another lion in the family.
Another group is magical exclamations. Mom is Shazam, and her daughters are abracadabra, and the twins Ka-Pow...Ka and Pow.
All twins are named collectively. We had another set born this year and they were named pistol grip, pistol and grip.
We also have a pale face and a no face, 2 unrelated beefers born within 2 days of each other. And we have a longhorn cow named pancake, and her son was christened waffle iron.
With the cows, the goal is not to remember when they were born, but to be able to identify family groups.
our potbelly pair is jack and jill, and I forgot to mention, our disney animal was a mixed breed brown dairy goat named surabi (simba's mother). we sold her to someone on this forum.

We named year before last the theme of "things of the ocean/coast." Last year gem stones. This year StarWars' names. I like it, but I'm not so sure that it is as useful and I thought it would be. (I heard of the idea from this forum)

We do the SAME THING Ma Boo! We have Ursula, Imogene, Della, Henrietta, Esmerelda, Edith, Wilda and Minerva to name a few. They make great chicken names don't they?
As for our goats, not sure it's a theme, but Mom came pre-named - Hanna, so her two doelings followed as Nina and Verna. That leaves our little wether, "Otis the goat-is". They're not registerable, and I doubt there will be much reason to track future generations much so its not as important. Fun thread.

My goats usually name themselves. Pogo, the goat in my avatar, got her name by the way she bounced around as a kid. Her sister, Frisbee, used to practically fly thru the air as a kid. One goat here just "looks like" a Nina, so that's what I call her. My old black granny goat with the droopy udder (came to me late in life) looks like and IS a Mammy, so that is her name. The little MiniMancha who's supposed to kid out any day is the color of butterscotch, and her name is Butterfinger. I'm waiting on the new doeling to suggest her name to me. . . .

We use names from songs (or otherwise musically related).
