A packgoat friend has/had a big saanen wether that was named "Pie". He could sail over any 5 ft fence. So it was decided to say that any high fence jumping goat had the "flying Pie" gene. My two saanen boys -no blood relation to aforementioned goat- carried the flying pie genetics too. ) Hence I now have a totally non working electric fence that had previousl served my herd well for nearly 8 yrs ...or until my saanen boys grew up. Btw, any other goats we had were goats we bottlefed from birth and trained at a few weeks old to fear the fence and none of them ever jumped over it. The saanen's did not grow up here. (

...where goating is a bit tougher w/o a fence, currently.

I would think if you can ship dogs and cats you should be able to ship goats.

I looked into it for the buckling coming to me from MN. It depends on weight as to cost, and since this boy is already 100lbs+ it was going to be $500 plus a new crate plus health cert. So I'm looking at alternate methods. There's also Ron Keener transport, http://travelwithronk.com/ but for just one goat it wasn't cost efficient for me.

I flew a mini mancha buckling from NV to WI in March 3 yrs ago. He was fine, totally confused by snow, but never even a sniffle. However the goats I got from TX last April and drove to get, all got sick by the time we were home, that was way more stressful. I'd fly them anytime, but it's gotten so expensive since then. Checking into it last year for two 6 wk old nigie bottle babies plus health certs plus crate plus airfare was over $500.

We flew 2 doelings from Washington state to Arkansas. They stopped in Utah and had a layover in Atlanta. They were about 3 weeks old, flew in one crate and went Delta. Didn't have any problems with them.

We have been flying kids at 3-4 weeks old (all with Delta) and have had no problem, going or coming.

You are required to send "food" with the kids - we usually have a bottle with a nipple taped to it and then taped on the top of the crate - BUT the people at Delta never feed the bottle(s) to the kid(s). It doesn't seem to affect them. I always want to have it there just in case there was an extra long delay and the Delta (or any airline) folks actually thought to feed them.

This is actually less stressful than sending with a transporter - and much safer from picking up sickness or disease.

We've shipped kids all over the U.S., to Alaska and Hawaii. Have had an adult ND buck shipped to us from back east and Nubian kids from other states. The buck had to have a bit of a lay over in an animal containment area before he could make the second half of the journey. They were very friendly to work with and very concerned about our buck, but I'll bet they were really glad to see him finish his journey! We've never had any problems at all with air shipment of goats. We mostly use Delta out of Boise.

My family and I have flown four buck kids to the Dominican Republic. They arrived safely and went through quarantine without any issues. So far they have produced very nice kids for the dairy in the DR.

If you think flying goats in the US is expensive, you should try exporting them (but not unless you are certified Scrapie free, Certified, Accredited, and have goats that can test negative for Johnes, Bluetongue, Q-fever, etc.)
