Oy! My hubby is going to kill me!
So......right now I have 2 miniature alpine does at my house. One is my moms and is due in February. One is mine and just had twin bucks....Since the bucks are freezer camp bound, I will have to have another goat before my mom moves out so my girl Tootsie won't be alone. My husband and I talked about this about 3 months ago and he was fine with me getting another goat when mom moves out....
Well I've been talking to this lady about her alpines (full sized) and she has a doe I wanted....she originally wasn't going to sell her but decided to afterall...she tested CAE & CL free 6 months ago and is due to kid in February. She's sweet looking and while not show quality (i can't afford the show alpines I've seen) I think she'd be a great home milker, which is all I want......plus when I go up there I can meet her dam (who is in milk right now) and try some of the milk and cheese they have if I want
The only "problem" which to me, isn't a problem, is she was supposed to be bred to the alpine buck, but their Oberhasli (sp?) buck got out and played Mr. Romantic. So her kids won't be pure, but I don't think Ober x Alpine would be bad.
She is so pretty and looks alot like one of the Alpines I had growing up........and I haven't the faintest clue how I'm going to make this all sound appealing to hubby in the morning. He's blissfully sleeping away, unaware that at 1:40 in the morning his dear wife is wide awake contemplating on how to sweet talk him into this (he was thinking my 2nd goat would come in 6+ months). I know sometimes in life you gotta tell yourself "no".....but I really want her! And she's pregnant, so between her & Tootsie that should provide us with plenty of milk for a while
Oy...... I won't sleep tonight, but wish me luck in the morning! I think my darling hubby is going to have his favorite breakfast made from scratch in the morning....might even get up early to bring it to him in bed
Best Wishes,
Crystal

Bringing him breakfast in bed will be a dead giveaway.....lol.
I guess just explain to him the way you have explained to us. What is one more goat. At least you are not trying to sneak it in and say "Goat, what goat. Oh that old thing, been there a while....."

He'll probably say yes and you'll wonder why you stayed awake worrying about it all night. That's how it is at my house. I love the idea of an Alpine/Ober cross. I have many crosses and they're wonderful milkers with delicious milk. It's actually kind of fun choosing who to breed to who and seeing what they produce. I don't do that with my registered goats though. If all you're interested in is healthy goats and good milk who cares? People still buy a good dairy goat for a nice family milker.
Good luck. I can't wait to see a picture of her.

Well......hubby enjoyed breakfast
He acted like his usual self & I thought he wasn't on to me.
Then after he finished and was helping with the dishes he says:
"Alright Crystal...what's the deal? What do you want, how big is it, how much is it and is it going to eat us out of house and home?"
LOL
We're calling it my early birthday present (my b-day is on the 23rd). He was a bit leary of getting another one so soon...but, my hubby being the wise man that he is said:
"If we don't get this one now, odds are good you'll just find 5 more to smuggle home once I start working out of town, so it's best to go with you and provide some damage patrol"
hehehe
Now it's just a matter of working out the transporting and finding something that works for both of our schedules and hoping the one I have my heart set on will be there when I get there. Emailed her this morning to see if I could send a deposit to hold her so hopefully when she's done with her rounds of chores, she'll get back in touch and then I will know something for sure..
Hopefully we can get it all worked out.
As to the cross babies due.....surely it can't be an awful cross.....both are dairy breeds and both are disease free so I don't think it will be a problem..
Anywho.... hopefully I'll know more later and will update y'all when I know something more.
Oh and did I mention I have a great husband?
Best Wishes,
Crystal

The Oberhasli in the cross will give an extra dose of calm and gentle to the more aggressive nature of the average Alpine. So you see more red/black...so what? **(and they can too be registered with ADGA if both sire and dam were registered...it's called "Experimental") . You'll have upright ears, black sox, black on face and back strip...for sure. They'll be pretty but you are looking for a good milker too...my Ober x gals were the best milkers..smart and athletic with a capital "A".
My Ober X does give absolutely wonderful milk...actually are super hard to dry up- they are milk making machine mamma's. Our petite lil gals ruled the herd and gave way over a gallon each day in full production. My current 7/8's OberX doe looks like the goat in the latest Capital One Viking commercial( New Orleans one).

See? You worried for nothing.
That's really exciting. I'm forever calling things "early birthday or Christmas presents".
I can understand your excitement. Congratulations.

Oh my! He sounds just like my Hubby. I can never ease into anything with him, he knows all my tells. He sounds like a smart guy too! best of luck. I think the cross will be great too. Almost all my past goats were crosses, the only thing I kept pure was my registered nubians. I love alpine crosses, a little something extra to calm them down is a wonderful thing.

Okay! All is set and we are driving up to pick up my girl on Friday :-)
Still trying to decide on a name.....but either way she'll be here by Friday evening and I will finally have my standard Alpine She was a bottle baby and is a total love bug so I think the kids will really like her too...
She is due to kid on February 17. The lady hasn't registered her, but says she is registerable.
Alice, I don't think hubby will let me keep a kid....especially while were rooming my moms goat and her future kids here too....we simply don't have the room. When she kids I'll shoot you an email and post pictures here for everyone to see....if there's something you like I'm sure we could meet up somewhere
I'm very excited! When we pick her up I'll post pictures....hope she fits in well with the girls here.....Now I'm going to have to get a full sized milk stand though.... I built a PVC stand for the mini girls, but it won't work for a standard sized goat.. Oh well, I can cross that bridge later
Best Wishes,
Crystal

Ya know, I must have only come in contact with oddball Alpines. I've never met one that is "typical" of what people say of them..... I love the breed and have never encountered one that was aggressive or aloof.... Have met some Nubians you couldn't pay me to own though...very pushy and aggressive....though even in Nubians most I've met have been typical of the breed...loud, a lil ditzy and sweet.
Never met an Ober though..... I'm not sure if the buck is registered or not.... I'll ask. I didn't know I could register a cross.... Honestly though, I'm getting the doe for herself, not for the kids she's carrying. Were still trying to figure out a name for her....my daughter wants to name her Skittles so she's named after a candy like Tootsie lol
Pygmybabies- I like the way you think! Hubby was cool with the early b-day present pitch........ I highly doubt he'll let me use every holiday on the calendar as an excuse to buy a goat though lol
I can see how this goat addiction can get out of hand though! My limited space is kind of a blessing in disguise I think...helps keep me from letting things get out of hand.... Plus after this goat purchase I need to save $$ so I can afford to fence in about a 1/2 acre to give them a bit of browsing room.....then once I've saved enough for that, I'll have more space and could add another doe hahaha
Best Wishes,
Crystal

If I were you, I'd make sure the doe was registered and that I had registration papers in hand, before I picked her up. I've heard of many people getting gypped out of papers because of issues like this - sometimes by 'reputable' breeders.
Transfers or registrations can be done online, and the turn around is REALLY quick.

Secretcreek, too cute!! I love the commercials and watch for the goat. My hubby sent me a text telling me there was a goat on tv. I told him not many people would think it was too sweet when their hubby says "I saw a goat on tv and immediately thought of you, honey!" I do!!
