Cystic ovaries - hereditary?

I have found a promising doe and while researching her pedigree found out that her dam was retired due to cystic ovaries. This doe is 4 years old, dam was 5 at retirement. So, are cystic ovaries hereditary/genetic or environmental? We have a very small (1.5 acre) place so I don't really have the space to keep an animal that may not be useful to us. Thank you for your time.

Nevermind, it's a moot point. The seller doesn't test for CAE or CL and isn't willing to test her. Apparently she's never had a healthier goat and you can tell how healthy they are by looking at them. I would have been willing to pay for the tests if they'd come back negative...

Ouch. Keep running into that myself. Honestly, fertility problems in most animals seem to pass down, so I would console myself with that. Plus, the tests would probably have come back positive, and the owner probably knew that, otherwise they should have been fine with the testing.

That's what I was thinking too. It's beginning to look like there's only a small handful of responsible breeders in this area and they aren't selling anything until kidding time.

In my experience cystic ovaries do not seem to be hereditary. My parents had a doe with reproductive issues (she had to be bred her first cycle every year or she wouldn't settle, but when she did settle she had triplets, one year she was cystic and didn't breed). Her daughters and sisters never had any reproductive issues.
