Our own loss and bad day

Warning: whine-a-gram

I have been to 3 countries in 4 weeks. While in China last week, my best friend's hubby died. I was supposed to be at the hospital when he passed and felt terrible that I wasn't here for her. After flying 15 hours on Thursday, I came home for a few hours to hang with my wife and kids then went to my friend's house. I sat and held her hand while she talked, listened to his favorite movies and smelled his t-shirt until 3:00am. I had now missed two nights of sleep.

I finally ran home, went to bed and my son called from the barn at 6:00am to tell me that 2 goats were dead and 1 was nearly dead. In 9.5 years of hobby farming, we have lost a few chickens, one very old horse and 2 baby goats at birth. This kind of thing has never happened to us.

The best that I can surmise is that, while I was out of the country, my boys thought they were conserving hay and fed "loose hay" to the goats. When I looked at the hay, it had gotten wet and had some mold in it. We normally only feed off of clean bales so this was an error that won't happen again. The other goats are all completely fine.

We lost our two oldest goats (9yo) Carmel and Herriot as well as my 10 year old's beloved "Fizzee" (4yo) - a black/tan Nigerian Dwarf. Devastating.

In the process of hauling out the larger goats' bodies, I threw my back out in a big way and am now in major pain.

Yeah, it was a bad day.

I'm so sorry. The worst things always seem to happen close to the holidays. That's just awful.

Sometimes it seems that when it rains it really does pour. Sorry for all your troubles, and hope this is the last of the rain storm you've been facing.

Things happen around here when I can't be personally in charge even for a few days. Last week I had to work a couple of long days, leave in the dark, come home in the dark. Finally I get to go out myself, 3 dead baby rabbits, 1 dead peachick, 1 peahen loose in the yard.....
Not as heartbreaking as goats, but it just seems like it happens every time.

Sorry for your troubles, CJB

We all go just one day at a time, bless your heart. I am sorry for the loss of your friend, but your kindness certainly shines forth...you did your best. We all lose critters we love, be it accidental or just their time. It is so hard to say goodbye to the one special critter in your life....praying for healing for you, there is nothing worse than backaches and thowing out your back. You need to quickly get back in shape, December is quickly approaching, and old St. Nick is going to need you as well.....

Dang, CJB- that was a rough few days. I'm sorry y'all had to go through that. I hope the boys are okay, after all they were trying to help.

So sorry for your loss I noticed that I throw out my back whenever I am stressed. And the pain in the back sure doesn't help the pain in the heart. Gentle hug for you...here is a glass of red wine to go along with a pain killer I hope you got from the doc. Now rest.

I am so sorry to hear this. We've been there when the bad stuff just kept on happening. If you can try the steroid shots it might help your back--usually they help my back unseize.

How sad. That is a bad week!
Don't have the words to make it better, but know that you aren't alone.
