Sores on doe. Need advice please
Hi. I'm worried about my doe & I'm hoping y'all could give me some advice. She is a 2 year old miniature alpine who is pregnant & due December 11th. Her appetite is voracious, she's alert, active, normal eye lid color, normal temperature, normal stools.
Early this week I noticed a small cluster of small white blister looking bumps under her tail. They started out like small white bumps & now it looks as if they have burst open.....I don't see any pus/ fluid leaking from them, they just look open now for lack of a better description. I don't know what I should do as I'm not sure what I'm dealing with. The cluster is still in the same location with just a slight amount of spreading on the top part, towards the base of the tail. Any advice on what I should do to clear this up would be really appreciated. I took some pictures of it with my phone this morning and I will try to get them uploaded and posted here as soon as I'm able.
Thanks in advance!
Best Wishes,
Crystal

Sorry these aren't the best pictures (nor are they the prettier end of my girl, lol) but I hope they'll help identify my problem.

Sounds like Staph Dermatitis. Spray with Chorahexidine and then pat it dry, or you can use Ammens powder. It should clear it up in a few days. Might want to think about vaccinating with Lysigin. This will help with this problem.

Lovely
Will TSC carry the Chlorihexidine? Is it a spray? What about the Ammens powder? Would the powder be sold under any other name (just wanna make sure I know exactly what to get before I leave for town)?
I had planned on getting the Lysign & just haven't ordered it yet....will be able to on Monday though. How do they get this? Can she pass it to the other doe too!? What a mess..
Thanks for your help, really appreciate it.
Best Wishes,
Crystal

I get the Chorahexidine at a Vet Supply place, but TSC might carry it. I buy it buy the gallon, dilute it, then put it in a spray bottle. I just take a quart jar and put about a inch of Chorahexidine in it then fill the rest of the way up with water. The Ammens powder is zinc oxide base. I got it at Wal-Mart I think. It's a people product. LOL

Isn't most diaper rash cream zinc oxide base? It sure does dry up the "oozies" on the horses....

Could also be Orf, known as Sore Mouth when they get it on their face. It just has to run its course.
TSC has Chlorhexadine, labeled as Nolvasan. Blue stuff you dilute in water.
I think Fight Bac, the udder spray is also Chlorhexadine.

I picked up the Nolvasan at vet supply and cleaned the area really well. Checked the other doe & she has a very small bump below her lower lip but no where else on her body. Does this mean I've got goats with sore mouth??? How on earth did they get it??? There have been no goats out on the property for at least 10 years and both girls came from the same breeder. The doe who has the bump close to her lip had a small mark by her nostril when I picked her up...it looked like it had had a scab at one time, but had since fallen off. I assumed it was an old, partially healed scrape and thought nothing else of it.
If it's sore mouth do I need to worry about the upcoming kids that are due in a month? Once gone how can I keep it from coming back?
I wore gloves and cleaned the area thoroughly and put all the dirty paper towels & gloves in a plastic trash bag. How many times a day should I do this and for how long? Should I worry about my kids playing with the goats? They're 5 & 7 and play with the goats daily and I wouldn't wanted them getting something from them.
I know I'm probably worrying too much I know.....I just spent so much time trying to make sure I got ggood stock and did everything I could think of to ensure they're healthy & it kind of sucks that I've got a problem & don’t know what caused it. On the bright side at least its not one of the worse issues that crop up in goats...
Thanks for your help....I really appreciate it.
Best Wishes,
Crystal

Take a deep breath. In, out.
Sore mouth will run its course and be gone. It's a virus, like chicken pox, and those goats will have immunity now. I don't know about the kids getting immunity, but I'd suspect they will have temporary (at least) immunity from colostrum, as the does will have just gotten over it.

That looks like Orf to me. Frankie had it on his lip. It was gone in a week or so. No one else got. I did not treat it.

LOL Alice, thanks for that! I spent so much time reading about horrors that can crop up in goats, and waiting YEARS to finally get them and I got a bit panicky when I saw this.... Call me the queen of paranoia!
I went back out to the barn with my phone & a light so I could compare the spot on Keys lower lip area to the pic Minelson posted and they look very similar except Keys has only 2 lil bumps so far. She also has 4 faint dots (though not raised bumps or sores) about 1/2 way up her tail......Tootsie's tail started very similar, and the spots look identical though when I saw Tootsies they had already started getting bigger and raised.. So...I'm going to take a guess and say Keys tail will probably look like Toosie's in a few days. No clue if it helped any, but I went ahead and cleaned Key's tail with the nolvasan while I was out there so I could at least feel like I was doing something. The girls were NOT thrilled with my late night, harassing visit! I think Tootsie is holding a grudge against me for tying her up for the cleaning earlier...she snubbed her nose at me & even refused the apple slice I offered ( and she's never turned down apple before)!
Anywho....thanks for all the advice........I've managed to get my initial paranoia in check enough to finally quit running out to the barn every 15 minutes and after the help here, and some reading I feel good enough to sleep
Best Wishes,
Crystal

From what I read about Orf when Frankie had it (I was in total freak out mode!) the main problem from it is when kids are nursing and it getting on the the mom's udder and causing problems there. So I was watching out for that. I would continue with Chlorihexidine just in case it is staph and not Orf. It won't hurt. Just be sure to dilute it with water to a very very pale light blue. A little goes a long way.

You can get a vaccine for it from Jeffer's and do all the babies when they are born- this 'should' keep it at bay, BUT not garanteed. If you can find a good solvent to dissolve the sores, as long as they are pink skin underneath, you should be OK and then vaccinate to be sure. It will run through the rest of your herd so vaccinate quickly!

Sore Mouth:
The vaccine is live and is given so that they get it and build immunity. The goats we export are given it and sent to the shipper to be held while it runs its course. As the name suggests the mouth is sore and the animal is in pain, causing it to not want to eat.
It can be transferred to humans. That is one reason the shipper takes care of kids.
That scab you found can reinfect everyone, including newborn kids.
Once it has run its course, do a barn cleaning.
Kids do not get immunity from the colostrum. Otherwise we would just vaccinate the does and the kids would be fine.
