Triplets- help needed.

One of does had triplets this morning! They are the cutest things in the world...but I'm having a few problems. The mother isn't wanting to let them nurse. I held her and they nursed alright, but she won't nurse them on her own. Now, on top of that, another doe who is experienced has "stolen" the babies! She is pregnant (in late pregnancy), and the babies were so small that they fit under the gate, and in with her... she is talking to them, licking, and I even just saw her let one nurse! I tried to seperate them and she came running into the other pen and got very upset.

What should I do? How often do I need to be sure they nurse their mom?

If you have a stall that you could put mama and babies in for a few days until they bond, and then if needed, clip mom to the wall so the babies can nurse, or hold her if she will allow you to keep doing that. If the afterbirth is still around, rub it on the babies to put her smell back on them, even some of the post birth goop might help. (I'm thinking the other doe's smell on them may be hindering the bonding.)

If you don't have a stall to move them to, try putting babies in a large dog crate until when you are not there.

Congrats on your babies!!!!

Okay, I just got back from the barn and realized a way I could keep them from going under the gate - Just switch sides! The gate is blocked by a wooden board in a way that there is a gap from the one side, but not the other. She did have her own stall, it's just right next to the other doe's, and the babies were crawling through.

Mom finally has started tending them! I clipped her to wall, and at first she kicked a little, but then she kind of had an "a-ha!" moment where she realized, "hey, these are mine!" She's licking them now, and letting them nurse, and pretty much acting the way the other doe was towards them. Maybe seeing their interaction helped?

Everything is in order now, even if it did take a while!

This is the little boy. He's a piggie! He caught on to nursing the quickest, and is the biggest.

Doe number 1. She is the littlest one of the bunch.

Doe number 2. I'm still in shock that she had triplets!

Congratulations on the triplets AND on getting momma doe to care for her kids.

It's always so nice when everything comes together.

Thanks guys! I'm really excited. This is only the second kidding here, and the first multiples! After seeing the size of a single kid last year, I was shocked that these were so small!

I'm definitely going to keep one of the does, but I have no idea how I'm going to decide! I guess I'll just have to wait and see how they develop.

Oh My Gosh those little babies are precious!! I just love those little Nigerians, they are always so darned cute!!

Spring 2009 I had 3 of my 4 Nigerian does' delivery triplets. I was amazed with my odds, this year all of them just twins but that's OK too.

Hehe, thanks everyone! :baby04: I can't wait until they get to that stage where they play and hop for no reason...and until my other does kid...the cuteness makes up for any lack of sleep.

I thought goat addiction couldn't get worse, but it just did!

I think it should be a rule when you have cute babies that every time you go out to watch them, you take pictures for us.

My daughter calls that stage when they start jumping around "getting their springs"
Just wait, the addiction just keeps getting stronger and stronger too
Seriously cute babies!

Haha, "getting their springs" is definitely accurate!

I might need rehab soon.

I have another question: The mom still has some afterbirth hanging, and it's been over 24 hours now...should I be worried, or is it normal? She has already lost one afterbirth, and it's possible she's lost two and I didn't see it, but this bit is still hanging. At what point should I call the vet and see about getting some oxytocin (spl?) or something? I'm afraid we might have shocked her body into not working right, because she is VERY skittish of people, and we had to catch her so much right after her very first time kidding...

I agree...Is there any opposition?
Nope.
I hereby deem this a rule.
