For you buck owners

How large of an area do you have your buck(s) in? I have a nigerian dwarf & we're hoping to make him another enclosure a bit farther from the house (stinky!) and wanted to know what a good (but not too big) size is.

Thanks!

From my limited experience, about a 1/4 of an acre can support a single goat without it clearing the entire area.

I agree with that, however, if you are going to be feeding your buck, you can put him in a much smaller space.
I know a fellow who has a small flock(1 buck and 4 does) in a space approx. 40' long by 12' wide.
My full sized buck(Kiko/Boer) is contained in an area of 25'x25'...

Our buck pen is 35X90 feet and can be divided into 2 35X45 areas each with its own small barn. Most of the time it only contains our Kiko buck.

My neighbor has 4 large bucks and they keep them each in their own 6x8 pen year-round. Each one has a calf hut.

Our buck pen is 40 feet long. Half of it is 20 feet wide and the other half is 28 feet.

Our Buck pen is attached to the barn where they can go in & out when they want to & outside the penned area is 50 feet X 40 feet.

They also have a 100 X 100 fenced pasture area & they also get to roam around the property a couple times a day as well, so they browse where ever they want to.

After all my flowers are gone I let the boy's & girls take turns & one or the other are usually loose all day till night when we feed & lock up for the night.

Our buck house is sectioned with 2 stalls (each having its own feeder bin that can be filled from the outside) and both stalls opening into a 6' x 14' play area. There is an additional open shed (12' x 18') attached to one side with the baking soda & minerals containers hung on the wall. (Two water buckets hang on walls.) All of this is in one corner of a 70' x 40' grazing area (with lezpedeza shrubs sectioned off on one side throwing its seeds into that pen yearly). All of this can be sectioned to either let the bucks roam together or keep them separated. Next to this is a 2-acre pasture full of orchard grass and shrubs they can enjoy.

I don't like keeping a single buck alone even if he is within eye shot of other goats. I usually keep the doe(s) each buck will breed in with him except at times I don't want them bred; then I keep both bucks together in the above-described buck housing.
