Just for fun- pics (heavy)

Hi, I'm back after an excellent summer and a busy beginning-of-fall. I have a lot of catching up to do... did I miss anything really important? I think I posted about twice this summer, and I never even had time to lurk...

I did not breed this year, nor will I be breeding for next. I do have two dairy pets who I can't part with, so I still have them. I also bought two 3/4 boer bucklings (who have since been wethered) back in May, who I was going to have butchered for this fall but then everyone got quarantined for exposure to rabies. So no eating or selling or leaving the property for any of the mammals until February (except the dogs and cats, who were vaccinated), but the butchers will not butcher for us till April (an 8 month quarantine vs. 6) just to be safe. So of course I'm getting really attached to these boys... they have radically different personalities than any of the babies that I've bred here. They are goofy boys, and not as bright-seeming as the kids of raised before but very very sweet. And Yukiko, my Saanen that I kept, is really maternal towards them. I think she missed having babies of her own and adopted them.

So here are a few pics, just for fun.

Here are the boys when they were little, sometime in June. They really havent grown that much, which is disappointing, but their half-alpine mother was just a little thing so I guess I cant expect that much. They have bulked up a bit, though. They are around 60 lbs at the moment. I dont know what to expect from meat goats, so I dont know if thats no good or what. Casper is the tan headed one (and he is so dumb... but you can't help loving him) and Calvin in the brown headed one. He's much less demanding, more clever, and less of a drama queen than Casper.

Then these are from a few weeks ago.

Casper is trying to bite a cat here - one of his favorite activities. This is the only cat that puts up with it. And Yukiko is wearing my hoodie, because she kept trying to pull it off of me.

I do hope that these are at a manageable size... I know the first two are but I dont know about the last three. My computer shows them ok. Photobucket was acting up, as usual.

Very cute! They've grown a good bit. I wonder what Casper has against cats!?

Great pics and cute goats, although by April you may be too attached to slaughter.

Nah, on my back on the electrical spool in their pen. Casper, of course, stepped on me...

NO idea! My hands get dirty if I pet them a long time, so they must have some super secret dirt hiding powers. Wish I could use it for my floor....

Probably. But I can't keep them... I already have two does that are equal to wethers right now in terms of usefulness! Plus, I really want to try goat.

Great to have you back! You were missed for sure, had been wondering where you'd been!
Those are Great pictures & I agree with Minelson, You should definately enter the 4th picture(with the boy's from underneath) in the photo calendar contest!

I Love the wethers, they are always my favorite & always so lovable & snuggable! You could maybe just keep them around for company for the other goats!

Cat hair is a delicious, don't ya know. My bottle babies love to pull it off the cats and eat it. Seems to go down better then dog hair, lol. I have one cat who would cry, yet but stupid enough to stay there and be "plucked".

Why in the heck would they quarrantine you for so long? Rabies does not incubate in anything for that long.

They will either annoy you enough by April to eat them, or you will be too attached. After all how much more space and feed do two goats take up

Katie you and my daughter think alike, if it were up to her we would have double the wethers we do now!

No idea, but we also get weekly surprise visits from animal control to make sure that everyone is still in their proper place and not showing signs... We also have to slaughter any that are sick in any other way, like scours, because apparently rabies can mimic other illnesses. Fun stuff.

Wow - maybe we should really be vaccinating our goats for rabies. Hmmm.
