Anyone here feed "Chaffhaye"??

The breeder of my girls feeds Chaffhaye and they devour it like candy and the entire herd looks fabulous (about 30 goats total)! She also feeds it to her 2 horses and 2 miniature cows...
The breeder uses one package every 3-4 days or so and according to her she was actually able to save a bit of $ on her grain bill by switching over.... She of course has many animals who she feeds this to, so she doesn't have to worry about spoilage and such.... But I was curious if anyone with smaller numbers feed Chaffhaye, and if so how do you store it and how long does it keep??

I would LOVE to continue using her feeding program but since I'll only have 2 mini goats I worried about storage issues so I wrote to the company about more economical, smaller packages than the 50lb "bales" to make it easier for people with small stock numbers to safely use their product and here's the reply I got (fairly fast reply at that, I was impressed):

" We will be producing in smaller package (probably the 25 lbs.) for next season.- Since Chaffhaye is made from fresh forage we can not implement changes that quickly.- Since we are just about at the end of our season, we won't have fresh product available for the smaller package until the next growing season.- Again, thanks for your input. Please be looking for the smaller packages.

We *generally* don't have high humidity on a regular basis but I still worry about 50 lbs of chaffhaye going bad before I could use it. Were going to buy 1 bale of it after we get the girls simply to keep them on what they had prior for their first bit here and were going to try storing it in an airtight container to see what kind of storage we could get...though our plans are to use a grain mix along with free choice alfalfa pellets/hay until different packaging on Chaffhaye is available....But I thought I'd share the email just in case there are some Chaffhaye feeders here who may be interested in smaller bales in the future.

Best Wishes,
Crystal

I've been feeding Chaffhaye for over a year and it was ok, they liked it for sure but still did leave all the stems. I didn't see much difference in milk production but my dry yearlings started getting quite fat. Now that I only have Nigerians, feeding it to only the milkers and babies, it was taking too long to use up a bag. Our summer was quite hot and humid and I had one bag go bad before I even opened it (could have had a pin-hole in it that I can't detect I guess). So for my milking does, I'm going to just stay with alfalfa pellets as at $12. a bag, pellets last almost 3 weeks vs. Chaffhaye at $12. a bag must be used up within 3-4 days. (lasts a bit longer in winter)
The smaller bags would be great but I'm sure they'll be even less cost effective.
Too bad you couldn't buy the sample bags (2 lbs each) by the case!

I only have two goats a saneen/nubian and a full bred La Mancha who is only six months old. I just switched to feeding chaffehay about a month or two ago. The girls love it! It's way more cost effective than the regular bales of alfalfa because there is literally no waste. My girls just put their face in the bale and eat everything. A 50lb bag lasts us just over a week. So, now we spend less $$$ on the free choice stuff like oat hay and three way and that is what the waste is on I read up on it and the probiotic amount in the chaffehay is so good for the goats rumen. I live in Southern CA and our summers here aren't humid if anything they are dry. I simply take the bag when I buy it and put it into a tin trash can with a tight lid and put the trash can in an area that's always shaded and stays nice and cool. For a while I kept it on the side yard in the carport but now I keep it in a shady area near our shed. Anyway, long story short our goats love it and I am very happy that we switched.
