Just when you thought it was safe..

Just when you thought it was safe...
Sugar was fine yesterday, maybe a little cough but that coulda just been cud or some dry leaf or hay...
This AM she was right at the fence waiting to be fed and milked, put back in pen everything and everyone seem great..coffee time!!
2 cups later walk out to the fence on the left of the house and get to work on it, boy the little goats made a mess of it, run to town for T-posts, get back chit chat with neighbor, text from pygmybabies go over and get fence stretcher, get home noticed Sugar was still in shed hmmm put up 2 sections of cattle panels where the littler goats pushed down the old fence, went up and got the goat thermometer... ... 106.7 HOLY COW !!!
white of eye very pink around eye very pink yeah so don't let me see your gums...do I really need to do that for a goat?? Did it for cats and dogs so maybe not...but it was a little pink...ran up to house got the LA200 (dangit I shoulda just got that dang Pen G way back when) "where are the gol dern needles!! " ahhh found em. Injected, Sugarbaby she was soooo not pleased but not fighting as much which worried me, stomach looks painful, slight pressure made Sugar groan, stop pressure Sugar still groaning GREAT!! now what!! Been in shed all day no sign of fresh pellets, no diarrhea either...baking soda and water (don't know why I grabbed the pepto thank goodness she spit it out when I wasn't looking) what else??? seriously? call Pony. After this and that call to Jewels, give more LA200, give vit D, Give Banemine. EEEK no banemine, no vit D got goat power punch (AHH HA there is B and D and other vitamins in it) No Banemine and no vet on a Sunday Evening ASPIRIN yes!! nooo! cause all I have in the house is Ibuprofen (geez some days I really am stupid) oh and K-9 aspirin liver flavored umm yeah no...Took temp again 107.0 yup really freakin out now but gonna make long story short.
Ran to town got ASPIRIN- Pony had told me how much to give which was allot because Sugar is a bigger goat, crushed and desolved them sucked it up in a syringe, took Sugar's temp before giving 106.3...just took temp again 40 minutes later 106.1.
Still can't breathe yet BUT want to say thank you to Pony and O'Jewels for all their help!!

Oh and to top it all off I have 1 chick hatching 3 days early???

I sure hope those antibiotics have kicked in & started working by morning! I wonder what happened so quickly, is she breathing OK, do you think maybe Pneumonia?
Let us know how she's doing in the morning if you can & any changes.

This morning her temp was down to 104.7, I got some more aspirin on board probiotic and goat balancer, with a goat punch kick. Her udder was overly warm and her milk is now the consistency of yogurt, but I think allot of that had to do with her high temp yesterday. So milked some out it was very uncomfortable for her and will do it again this afternoon and this evening. Will start to dry her off and just let her rest. She is moving about now. Took a sick day today cause well I am actually coming down with something but will be home to watch her.

If this is mastitis, drying her off is *NOT* the next step! You have to treat the mastitis and keep milking her out (several times a day) until the mastitis is cured!

Leaving germ saturated milk in her udder is asking for disaster.

Send a sample to the LSU Mastitis clinic, asking for them to test it for infection AND test for which antibiotic to use.

Mastitis Testing
Ship to:
LSU Ag Research Center
Hill Farm Mastitis Lab
3380 Highway 79
Homer, LA 71040
(318) 927-9654

Take a sterile sample in a whirl pak (from the vet) or a red top test tube.
Freeze, and ship in styrofoam shipping box with a gel pak on Monday.
The testing is free. The shipping will make you bug eyed.

Ship OVERNIGHT AIR with UPS!

Note: I keep a stock of small styrofoam shipping boxes on hand now. They are great for shipping milk as above and blood for pregnancy or CAE testing. These boxes are available from: http://www.mrboxonline.com/6x45x4-mi...rs-p-4394.html

Naw didn't mean I was gonna dry her off now. First got to get her through this and then I will once it is feasible.
Her temp has fluctuated through out the day . Had to do something at work this morning took about 40 minutes and rushed home, took her temp again it was at 105.1 gave her Aspirin and it got down to 103.0. Milked her out. 4pm her temp was going back up (of course she was hiding out in the goat shed where its freakin hot) 104.6 gave her more aspirin and goat punch, once I let her go she ran out of the goat shed like I was the meanest person on the planet. Then she started munching some grass. I "think" she had/has pneumonia and now has mastitis on top of it due to the high temps she had running yesterday. Good sign is she isn't coughing anymore, nasal discharge is gone, and no diarrhea (as of yet)
Oh yes the whites of her eyes are starting to look normal.

You might want to pick up some Probios for her to give while on the antibiotics.
Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon & start brining her temp down.

Dang! Sugar sure is giving you a run for your money, my friend!

Be sure to keep the antibiotics up for 5 days. Probios are great. I give them in a marshmallow (but I double up on the probios b/c of the marshmallow... evens it out? LOL!~)

So glad that she's making some improvement. Poor girl - and poor WW!

And if she is dealing with mastitis now, I'd infuse with Pirsue. Don't fool around with Today, use Pirsue. Mastitis is something you don't want to wait on. Problem is, Pirsue is a vet prescription. And while you are there, get some banamine. It is good for mastitis and pnuemonia.
Hang in there!

K ..met some neighbors that do meat goats down the way they gave me the name of their vet. Hopefully he won't have a problem with scripting either one. The meat goat guy told me that with LA200 it is slower acting but he said it works good for 3 days. Keeping up with the probios should practice what I preach right? Checked on her at 6 pm she is out grazing in the field with the others (fingers crossed).

Keep up the good work! Sounds like she may be on the mend, I sure hope so anyways. Never had mastitis here so I can advise on that.
Try to take care of yourself too & don't worry yourself sick or you won't be able to care for all the critters.

Put a call into vet to get (hopefully) the banamine and the Pirsue. I can get the aspirin down Sugar but it isnt fun wrestling with a 140# goat. Her temp was up to 106 this morning....she knows now what that syringe tube looks like and gets an obstinate look on her face. The aspirin works but rather have something that works better. Anyway vet was in surgury so waiting for him to call me back.

Finally!! Tried to post last night but for some reason would not let me.
Got a dose of Banamine on board and infusion into the udder (last night and this morning) which really wasnt as hard as I thought it was going to be. No temp this morning, Sugar ate most her food with top dressing of probios. Vet told me to dose one more time with the LA200 and to keep massaging her udder with wet hot towels, Sugar hasn't decided if she likes it or not, seriously she will look back at me then at her udder.

If you are dealing with mastitis, IME Naxcel is the way to go as far as an antibiotic, if you can't get that I would use Penn. LA200(by the way which burns like fire, most goat people go with Biomycin which is the same active ingredient but different carrier and doesn't burn near as bad) is used once a day with goats because they metabolize drugs so much quicker then bovines. Like said above get Pirsue if at all possible and Banamine. I put a tube up each half for five days, give Banamine for four, and give the Naxel for about a week. Hope she clears up for you.
