How can you tell?
How can you tell when a doe is in heat? I know you can "tease" her with boys, but if you have no boys, how can you tell?
I have made the decision that I will not keep bucks on my property, as it seems that they are deathly allergic to something in the air here. The does are immune however and seem to do well, so rather than giving up altogether, I am contemplating keeping the girls. Someone (not sure if they want to be named or not, so I won't) was wonderful enough to offer to let me breed my girls to one of their bucks if I decide to keep them, but I need to know when they are in heat before I make the nearly 1hr drive to have them bred.
I'm in no hurry - if I have to wait a few months before they're ready, that's no problem. I just need to know what I'm looking for. My saanen doe is 16+ months old. If she came in heat last fall/winter, I couldn't tell. I don't know if she just didn't, or if I just didn't notice.

It is easier to tell if there's a buck around for sure but my girls will get noisier, want more lovin, & will have a mucus type discharge. I also have Nigerians & just got mini nubians, my Nigerians come into heat every 21 days or so when not bred & no kids on them.

Yep, and they flag tails too! Some will not show all the classic signs either but once the buck is around its a giveaway.
My one Nubian gets rather vocal. She's getting on in yrs but just yesterday was flagging a bit & hollering a few soft "Maas".
I brought her to the buck, instantly wham bam, left her overnight. This am while doing chores in there she did what I figured she'd do, headed out the gate she was through.
Is she bawls in another 18-21 days he'll get another shot at her.

Gee...my saanen is lovey ALL the time with me....I swear she wants to be a lap dog. If I would let her in the house, I expect she would curl up on the couch with me....

Mine are always lovey too...it's just when they go into heat they go over the top. Gretta gets so bad with Boris, she will follow him everywhere. He gets tired of it and wants to get let into the house. She won't leave him alone!

Oh my. If OUR goats saw that lovely little door, they'd be in the house in no time!

I was just thinking the same thing! LOL If Molly could see me through a door like that, she would likely come through it, one way or another.

When I'm out in the pens with them, I'll put my hand on their rump, right at the base of the tail, and press down. If they are in heat, they will often waggle their tails.

You could get someone to send you a buck rag... if your ladies are in heat they will LOVE the smell of it. (Buck rag = rag that was rubbed on a smelly buck and thus is very stinky all on its own).

You can also check for discharge - clear at first and then changes to pasty white as the heat ends. I'll check my girls tails 2-4 times a day and that's usually enough to catch it and take note, watch for it again in 18-21 days.

Ohh I'd love to send a buck rag through the PO. Imagine the poor guys at the PO if the package ripped.
