horns growing back?

I was out checking our three 3 1/2 month old babies. The were all disbudded/dehorned at about 6 weeks (2 months ago), by our vet, the two boys had theirs cut off and burned by the iron, our girl had hers just burned. One boy looks great, the other boy and girl have little horns growing back, about 1/4 inch tall. The iron the vet used was for cows, it seemed very big to me. I am going to get an iron next week to do our dexter heifer, should I reburn the goats? Or am I now stuck with horns?

My Flossie just got little nubs and they didn't grow any further than that. Frankie has one nub and one scur. So yours might not get any longer....or you might have scurs.

Disbudding should be done MUCH earlier than that.

The best success I've had is within a week of birth.

I wouldn't reburn them at the age they are now.

I guess this was a more ' dehorning' than disbudding. Vet put them under, blood everywhere, it was awful! They were supposed to have been disbudded before we got them at 4 weeks old, but they 'never got around to it' and our vet said it would be no problem to cut them out if we put them under. I hate learning curves!!! would the size of iron have made a difference? It was one of those big metal tubular rings, not a tip for the horn to go into.

Thanks
Tilly

Goodness, I don't like your vet!

The experiences I have had with disbudding not working as well as I wanted, I simply used the cutters to take off the buds, reburning the area. Only had to do it once and no more buds!

I agree with Alice, they should have been done with in the first week of age most of the time.

I wouldn't re=burn them either & I definately wouldn't use an iron that is big enough for cows.

Or a good breeder in the area might be able to help you out...there really are not very many good goat vets around
