LLamas are here! Pic heavy

Yesterday we went to pick up our two llama yearling mares. It was stressful trying to find a horse trailer when my loaner lady didn't answer her phone, but at the last minute found one for rent. It was an interesting ride going with a shot gear box..
They loaded up just fine and laid down the entire four hour ride home. By the time we got back it was dark, but we have lights that come on at night in the yard so we could all see each other.

They are not socialized or trained in any way, yet they are not fearful, just apprehensive. They are very very curious and will eat from a branch we hold for them, or a scoop of grain - but not our hands. In time (and with training) I'm sure they'll come around, but they seem absolutely fine for now.

The goats freaked out. :smiley-laughing013: The llama girls wanted to meet them and there was a goat stampede all over the place.
They soon got over it though, and today everyone is calm and collected and walking amongst each other. We introduced the dogs to them too, and everyone did fine. I think the llamas were more interested in the dogs than the other way around.

We're thinking of calling them Delta and Astra - cigarette brands (you know, from the brand Camel - they are camelids).

Anywho - pictures!

I just love mine....he is a gelding, beautiful eyes, but will not let me touch him...the first week I had him, he would go around humming......was soooo funny....now he is just plain spoiled.....love your ladies, they are so pretty......my goats freaked and so did he when I first got him, now it is old hat, he just easily steps around them, they follow him....the pigs are a different story, he doesn't seem to care for them, keeps his distance, and they scare him.

What do you do with them? They are awfully cute! Is the humming a sign of happiness like when a cat is purring? Inquiring minds want to know =)

I don't do anything with them. :P Right now we're just trying to get to know them - they are already eating out of a scooper if we hold it for them, but they will not eat food from our hands.
In time they will be trained to walk on a halter and wear packs, and we can all go for walks.
I'm also hoping to get some spinning wool from them, and just maybe they'll deterr any foxes that come around at night.
Besides that they're just fun creatures to have around!

Tony Lama is a brand of cowboy boots

Beautiful critters you have there.

Ok, a question - hope someone knows.
One of the girls have very prominent metatarsal scent glands on both inside and outside of the legs, while the other has a barely noticeable gland on the outside and no sign of it on the inside.
The question is - why, and does it mean anything?
They are slightly different in size too, does this simply mean one is a bit older than the other? I don't know birth dates, just that they are both yearlings.

They are VERY pretty. My llama is NOT.

I highly recommend buying a set of $10 hand shears and clipping them in this heat. The coat will grow out fine before winter, and it will make them much more comfortable.

The hand shears take some getting used to and can make them look a mess, but they will be happy with less coat.

Thanks. But remember I'm in Norway. Summer is almost over so I don't see a point in clipping them now, temperatures will be going way down the next month and we'll be getting rain and generally bad weather. I will clip them in spring though, so they have time to regrow before winter.

By the way, I don't believe your llama isn't pretty.
