infected dry doe?

I have a alpine/nubian doe that has had three known pregnancies. First was good, second she delivered fine, but ended up with mastitis. I medicated and dried her off. This last pregnancy she delivered two kids and came in just fine. However, she came into milk to fast and after a few days had mastitis again, and could not drop milk to feed the kids. I pulled them and they were fine. I again milked her out, medicated (penicillin and mastitis med) and dried her off. Here she is 5 months later now sharing her pen with her buddy doe who is to deliver within a month. I thought she was looking quite thick in the utter last night so I went and sure enough, she has a few sqirts of milk in her good teat, but the other was at least three finger thick, and full of infection. Thick, like pudding but came easily when I "milked" her out. I did this until she was empty, leaving only a spot or two of blood that followed. She didn't even seem irratated when I was doing this. She just stood there eating. Medicate again? Maybe a different amount? This seems like all I do. We clean pens everyday, bare floor with fresh hay to eat and lay on. Two goats have 10x20 area with access to fresh outdoors with grass and elevated laying area. I don't know what would cause this! I know cleanliness is not the problem!

Send in a culture to LSU's mastitis clinic. Don't medicate until you know what you are dealing with. ASK THEM TO RUN A SENSITIVITY TEST, TOO!

Mastitis Testing

Louisiana State University Agricultural Center
Hill Farm Research Station Mastitis Laboratory
3380 Highway 79
Homer, LA 71040

(318) 927-9654

Ship to:
LSU Ag Research Center
Hill Farm Mastitis Lab

Take a sterile sample in a whirl pak (from the vet) or a red top test tube.
Freeze, and ship in styrofoam shipping box with a gel pak on Monday.
The testing is free. The shipping cost will make you bug eyed.

Ship OVERNIGHT AIR with UPS!

Note: I keep a stock of small styrofoam shipping boxes on hand now. They are great for shipping milk as above and blood for pregnancy or CAE testing. These boxes are available from: http://www.mrboxonline.com/6x45x4-mi...rs-p-4394.html
