Okay-we have a plan

So I found a 5 week old 12 pound pygmy wether boer who apparently thinks he is a dog. When I called in tears the husband handed the phone to his wife and she was so sweet while I cried over Lodden. She offered this wether and the milking set up we would need and said we could pick him up tomorrow. This would be just a companion for Millie.

I also found another farm who has 2 Saanen doelings and 3 Alpine doelings available. I'm not sure if I'm going in the right direction with these breeds; we brought home Saanens because we stumbled upon them and they were described as being great dairy goats, which is what I want. I think we just got really, really lucky with how sweet they were. Are most Saanens precious little boogers who love kisses and snuggles, or is that just a goat thing? I *must* find another (two?) to replace Lodden that has the same disposition. When Paisley's feet hit the ground in the morning she runs, in her pj's and garden boots, to the backdoor to go outside and tell the goats good morning. The new goat must be receptive to a rambunctious 4 year old human playmate. Would the Alpine or another Saanen fill this bill?

I think, once we have this wether, there won't be a huge rush to get another dairy goat so we can take some time to find the right one or two (an heir and a spare I guess).

I am just ready for this day to be over. And I didn't even get the first tomato in the canner all day long!

I'm really glad you found a whether friend for Millie! He'll help her cope with losing her friend.

Personally, I think the temperament would vary more with the individual than with the breed. I have Nigerian Dwarfs, and four are friendly, one is in between, and two are not friendly. It would be better to evaluate each individual than to pick one based on breed, unless you wanted to stick with one breed for showing or breeding purposes. Good luck!

So glad you found a companion for Millie. A Pygmy / Boer? That's got to be cute!

That's what she said. I'll be sure to post pictures later today.

Poor Millie. It stormed much of last night and she just wouldn't go in the shed where she and Lodden would go to stay dry. She wouldn't leave the rabbit hutch so we put up a makeshift lean to and layed a pallet down with some haystraw so she wouldn't be on the ground. I hope she takes to this new little guy. I've been trying to figure out what size baby diaper we'd need to bring her inside with us.

I have found that Saanen's are in general pretty laid back. Sugar I got when she was already 3 yrs old pretty much a herd goat not allot of handling, she has tolerated my learning curve, and absolutely loves to be petted and loved on. But as goats go she is also very stubborn
Definitely agree that goats are as individual as people are.

He was precious but we couldn't bring him home. Turns out, he wasn't a pygmy. His daddy was a *beast*. And he wasn't disbudded. : ( And his momma had mastitis and he had just broken free and nursed off of her. All in all I just didn't think he was a good fit, even though he was precious. He was so soft and so fluffy and full of spunk but I just it just didn't seem like the right thing to do.

Off to search further...

You will find the right one. Good that you followed your gut when things are so emotional right now. Good for you!
