Marajuana

Luckily, my goats did not get into my neighbors "garden", but if they had, does marajuana effect goats in any way? What would be my liability?

I have one goat "Gertrude" that is so laid back and relaxed and constantly eating something that I think she beat your goats to the ganja. When she got into the tomatoes she looked like a huge chipmunk with them in her cheeks. Yes, two at the same time. Peace

Dont know about the pot, im guess they are female plants so the posses the right stuff. We seized a parrot one time whos owner was constantly getting it stoned, the poor bird still says roll one buggie.

I did want to make a note that my goat mentor told me yesterday that tomatoe leaves are toxic to goats

To be 'stoned' the goat would have to eat the buds at the right time.
It would take a ton of leaves and stems to do anything at all.

I thought I read somewhere that the plant has to be dried first. Both genders can get you stoned and so can the leaves.

I had to move my horses to a different pasture because they were getting so goofy from the stuff. But I'm talking massive amounts. The wild only has a scant amount of THC in it. You wouldn't be liable for something that is illegal in the first place unless you are in a state where it is legal for medical reasons...and you are! I would make sure they don't get into it.

Hehe. I asked this same question about a year ago. DH has a prescription for medical cannabis, so he tends a small garden. Last year we got some male plants, so he fed them to the goats--they LOVED the stuff and sucked down an entire plant like it was a piece of spaghetti. I didn't notice them acting stoned, but then, how can you tell if a goat is stoned? In ant case, it's my understanding that the plant has to be cooked/burned to release the THC.

I have also been told that animals won't touch the plants once they are budding. Apparently the resin acts as a repellent to herbivores, as part of the plant's defense mechanism. We never let the goats near the garden so we haven't tested that theory.

As far as liability, I suppose if the goats get into your neighbor's yard and destroy the crop, they could try to sue you IF the garden is legal. But if the plants are leaning over your fence, that's their problem.

ditto on the drying and the rest of the info.
and much like anything it all comes down to genetics on how much it will take
to get you stoned.

all info verified in a former life as I was a "holigan" in my younger days, nuff said.

dont think it would hurt the goats at all if they did eat the whole patch seems the deer are pretty fond of the stuff too.

"Hemp" (Cannabis Sativa) is well known to be a very nutritious forage plant. When Cannabis is finally made legal once more, hemp seed, and leaf will make its' way back into feed stores as fodder and hay.

Since the US was a 'hemp economy' in the very beginning, the uses are endless and the oil energy crisis will suddenly be a thing of the past- and the 'war on drugs' as it pertains to the use of Cannabis will instead be able to jump start many local economies throughout the US. but then, that's why they cannot legalize it you see- that corporate headspace where someone at the top has all the money and the little guy has none.

And for some science!

THC, and THC bi-products, are not going to show up in marijuana during its vegetative growth cycle, or for that matter until the end of its flowering cycle...which, if you live in Northern California, and this stuff is being grown outdoors, it is still far and away from being ready to harvest.

THC develops from trichomes that grow on the leaves, buds and flowers on some strains of hemp. Trichomes are tiny, + clear, cloudy, or amber,+ bulbous shaped cells that grow on the leaves, buds, and flowers. Until they have developed, generally about two-three weeks before it is time to harvest the plant, the only thing the stuff will give you is a headache.

Before the trichomes develop and start producing THC, marijuana plants are no worse than anything else for goats. After the trichomes develop and start producing THC, goats won't eat it because it tastes awful.

I think your goats will be fine. Your neighbor's temper, however, should your goats get into his/her "garden", might be a different story.

This whole thread made me giggle...was this "garden" something the neighbors were supposed to know about? Maybe you have pot sniffing goats and the local police department will hire them...
