Scur growth
My buckling, who had his hornbuds burned near mid-June, seems to be developing scurs.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's just left over scar tissue but... on both sides??
He is going to be wethered as soon as my dh gets home early enough from work to help me, and will be our pet/companion/pack boy. Will that help slow down scur growth?
Short of reburning (which I have issues with.... just me.. just mine), what are my other options?
Also on this issue, the first girl I did back in March has one bud growing. However, it is now late July and that one still has not gotten above the hairline (just a bit more than a bump). She is a nubianX and her original buds were EXTREMELY slow growing, so I'm wondering if it is indeed growing, or if it is just going to stay this length?
Go easy on me.. these are the first (and only) babies we have burned so far and we are still learning. Both times we were just glad not to kill babies trying to do it, and the buckling's (the second one) were perfect copper rings.

I don't know about the boy, but the girl could just have button scurs. One of my girls has those. You can barely see them, but I can feel the when she wants her head scratched. If that is what they are, I wouldn't worry about them. Just keep an eye on them to look for growth.

can you post photos?
I am still learning and have had to reburn - it stinks, but is easier from a technical standpoint than the first burn and has been very effective. otoh if the scurs are tiny, they can break off almost unnoticed.
mine are nubians and crosses.

I was bad this year and didn't leave on long enough. Looked at it and thought it was good. They are more then just scurs... sigh
I really don't want to reburn myself because they are finally getting friendly.
yes, picture would be good.

How common are "button scurs"? We have a goat that feels like there are teeny tiny points on her head but nothing more. She looked like she was done pretty good when we got her but I can feel those little points now. I am hoping they don't get any bigger.

I did my first kids last year. The two bucks started to grow scurs but they fell of after wethering. Others have said if left bucks the testosterone will a lot of times make scurs come no matter what along with not doing a double burn or figure 8 looking burn cauterizing a larger area.

We've got scurs all over the place, a couple even need to be redone because of infections. But they aren't usually any problem. Unless they get big enough that they are prone to getting konked off.

Button scurs are fairly common. Usually they can be felt, but not seen. They are just there, they don't really grow. Smooth heads are easier to get on Nubians than most other breeds, but some Nubian lines are easier to disbudd than others. Alpine, Saanen and other swiss breeds are hardest to properly disbudd. Lamanchas are somewhere in the middle. This is the first year in a long time, I've had little button scurs on my doelings that I retained. I am not worried about it, and will not be reburning them.

i also have horns growing where they shouldn't be. the one growing the most is a doeling i have plans to keep for sure--her mother is 9, gave close to 2 gallons at peak and is still over a gallon a day, going on 6 months milking. so, this little doeling needs to be dis horned! i had a buck knock off a horn, it was horrible, and i believe he also got more aggressive towards me cuz he knew he had horns. and even knocked off almost at the base, his grew again anyhow. dang.
i have another doe, FF, with a curved scur, and i have to do something with it cuz its going back towards her head. the tip is round, but soon's the flies are gone, i'm going to be doing one of these with her. i tried just rolling a band and it looks like those pix of 'most common failure'.! lol! so now she has a scur with a narrow spot, but its still very much there and growing.
i think i may go for the second way, its further down and hopefully leaves a smoother head. but not til the fly season is over.

Thanks Emily. I don't mind the little buttons and I'm glad to hear they probably won't grow any more.
