Will I EVER learn???

A seemingly nice couple came yesterday to see one of my does. They spent time visiting and seemed to know a good bit about goats. I felt comfortable with them selling them a doe.
Well they ended up wanting her doeling along with her but didn't plan on that so were short of cash. (see where this is going??) Since they were over an hour away, I told them they could take the doeling so as to not stress them with a temporary seperation but that I would hold the doeling's papers until they paid the difference of $80. Before they left I coppered the doe and boostered the doeling with CD/T and updated their health records. I don't know why this time I completely forgot to have some feed ready for them to transition but I did and by the time I remembered, they were gone about 2 hours or so. I called and got voice mail, left a message and asked for them to call me back. They didn't. I called again this morning and same thing. I just send a nice email explaining what feed they were used to and their feeding routine and asked about their mailing address for the kid's health record and papers but I have a gut feeling I won't hear back from them at all. I hope I'm wrong. I had also offered a free breeding to both girls in the future which they seemed very happy about.

A while back I had arrangements to meet someone to sell a doeling. She was to have PayPal'd me the balance after the deposit. When we met, I asked her if she changed her mind about the PayPal as I hadn't received it. She said that she had sent it and didn't know why I hadn't got it. She asked if she could take the doe and re-send it again. I said no as the balance was several hundred dollars. She cried and was very upset as she lived a couple hours away. I felt really bad for her but I was too afraid to take a chance since I didn't know her at all and the amount owed was substantial. She finally had money wired to her and gave me cash all rolled up. I counted it and it was short $100. which she then handed me in another little roll and said she didn't mean to do that. It all turned out alright that time but I figured this time and only for $80. it would be ok and since I was holding the papers.... I guess I should take and stick with my own advice. CASH AND CARRY. At least the girls went together. Don't know if they'll stay together but if I never hear back I won't know any different. Just another expensive lesson and what I get for trying to be nice. (no "sucker" smilies?) Never, ever again.

I am so sorry to hear about that!

It is a severe problem we have nowadays, and people like that is what gives honest folks a hard time.

I have been trusted before over a substantial sum of money for goats, due to changes in plans...then had a comedy of errors that made it difficult to get that money to the person, but I always made sure the person was up to date on the reasons why. (Once, it was that it was supposed to rain and so my DH took my car to work instead of his motorcycle, and I was stuck without transportation for the day.) And yes, eventually I managed to break the cycle of an overdose of Murphy's Law and pay the person what I owed.

I hope that the people get back to you, and it was just a burp in the Universe that has caused this.

Hang in there. First, no. You'll never learn. It's the type of person you are...and so long as it's a limited amount of $, I don't think it's a bad character trait. Many of us appreciate an extension of trust. I believe the proverbial handshake deal went a long way in yesteryear. Your reputation counted on it, and reputations counted. Not so much anymore, but the act tells me you respect yourself and expect the same of others. NOthing wrong with that, so long as you don't get taken habitually.

I'll bet they'll call. Too much riding on the $80 not to. Papers for one, and free breeding for another. They may have to think it through, but I'll wager they'll be getting back to you soon. MOre than likely, they're busy with their new charges. HOpefully nothing has gone horribly wrong for which they're too embarrassed to return your calls. Let us know.

Hope you hear back from them. I've gotten burned so many times by buyers that the only time I'll take a check is for a deposit. That way there is time for it to clear before they pick up the animal and pay the balance in cash!

I went to pick up my goats yesterday. I had cash in hand for the full amount that was agreed upon before I went. I really don't know why people do things like that!
Now I am looking for someone who has a purebred Nubian buck to breed with my new ladies.

Thank you ALL for your well wishes. I am very embarrassed now. Not only did they call back (I never mentioned the money, only my concern for the girl's feed-change) they also PayPal'd me the balance.
Guess I'm a bit hormonal and jumpy these days. I really should have known better, just last week I prayed for good people to be sent to me to buy my sale goats and I should have had more faith. I also have a buyer for my yearling buck - great home!
I'm not a real religeous person but I'm thanking the Lord right now. It's not even so much about the money as it is that knowing my goats are in honest hands. Isn't that great? For once my gut was wrong and I'm glad.

Glad to hear that! I was hoping it was just some bumps in their road that was causing the delay. Glad your babies are in good, reputable hands!

I'm SO glad that turned out well for you and for the buyer! I have FINALLY learned to do CASH & CARRY sales only. Gotten burned so many times I'm beginning to look like charcoal. I *was* too trusting, I guess.

Glad it worked out well for you. You have a wonderful giving nature; and I do hope the disappointments experienced do not change that.

If you feel like taking your girls on a road trip, Beaux is feeling rather amorous these days. Nice looking buck, too, even if I do say so myself. He's an Ozark Jewels boy.

We hear so often of people getting messed over by buyers, and I can understand why you'd be concerned.

I know what you mean about knowing your goats are in good hands. I've been remarkably blessed in my buyers, and I'm not ashamed to say that I thank God for them (and ALL the great goat folks in the world).

Knowing your goats are "in honest hands" is a good feeling that warms you from the inside out.

I wasn't upset over that as they hadn't planned on taking her doe kid until they got there and I was happy as a clam that they were staying together as I prefer selling 2 bonded animals together. It was ok though and I'm sending out their paperwork today.

Oh tell me about getting attached! I need a 12-step program. I'm also shocked that my DH even said he misses the doe.
Although I sure do appreciate when they email and send pictures which almost all have done so far, I can't reasonably 'expect' anyone to stay in touch with me. And there have been times where it makes me sicker to hear back from them. Thankfully those are very rare. I always tell people call me anytime for help or questions and if they have problems, they can even call in the middle of the night, especially if they were one of mine.
