Ugh ... I have two goats with seperate problems ....
Okay , I have a 3 year old Nubian buck who has suddenly become so stiff he can hardly walk . I'm not even sure he can lay down ??? This has just happened within the last three days . And now he's got a discharge from his nose and making a wheezing noise . Is this CAE ??? Edited to ad > I see and feel NO swelling .
Then I also have a yearling Nubian doe who has a baseball sized lump on the side of her belly . It feels like it is liquid filled maybe ? Definitely under the hide,no scab or anything . She doesn't mind that I touch it .
Is this CL? This just showed up within the past three days as well ! I looked at a chart of where CL abscesses show up and this one is about 5 inches from the spot it showed on the chart where the hind leg starts ....
I've had the doe since last August ,and we just got the buck in February . They were both supposed to be from CAE/CL free herds .......
Any help would be greatly appreciated . The local vet "doesn't do goats " and I am without a vehicle until my husband comes home (which could be weeks unfortunetly )...

Oh , and one more quesetion ...I've read there's been no case of CL being passed on from breeding but what about CAE ? If he does have it are all my does infected now as well ?

I'm not sure what's going on with your goats, but I do hope that someone will respond soon.

It was my understanding that CAE is passed through the milk, so I believe your does would be safe.
A baseball size lump sounds too big to be CL, but I'm no expert, so I could be wrong.
I also hope someone who knows will chime in soon.

Thankyou so much . It's horrible to see my buck in so much pain
And then the doe is really one of those "once in a lifetime" goats ,she's so special and is my children's favorite .

Do you have any banamine you could give him for pain, until you find out what's going on with him?
According to Fiascofarm.com, you could also give him Ibuprofen at twice the human dose, or Aspirin at 1 regular pill per 10lbs.
Can you see anything like an injury or embedded object in the doe's lump? A baseball size lump just doesn't sound like CL, which is supposed to be about the size of a quarter...
I'll be praying for them both, and you! I'm sure you're a nervous wreck, especially with the doe being so special.

I don't I don't have anything ! My husband's pickup broke down at 2 in the morning last week so he had to take my SUV so we've been without a car for a week now . I don't know anybody here ,I don't even know my neighbors .
Thank God we have a never ending supply of milk and eggs or we wouldn't have much to eat and drink ! LOL
My parents will be visiting on Wednesday and I can have them pickup some then but that's so far away .
WAIT ,I have childrens liquid tylenol ??? Could I use that ???

Oh ,forgot to answer your other question . No , there is nothing embedded in the lump . It is definitely under the hide , she wasn't jabbed or anything , her coat is smooth and shiny over this large lump . I have no idea what it is !

another goat coulda rammed her, and it swelled under the hide. bit by a bee, or snake could also do it. can you get a needle in and pull out some of the fluid?
not sure on the buck, but i know i've read about something like that before. how old is he?

Yikes! That's a bummer... Banamine is an RX drug (normally used for horses) that you would have to get from a vet. Some vets would probably let you call in the problem and let your parents pick it up, but some might not want to sell it to you without seeing the goat.
I really don't know about Children's Tylenol. I'm not sure what type of medication is in it? Also, they recalled some recently, so who knows if it would even be safe for humans.
She could have been hit by another goat, and just be swelling. Could you get a picture of it?

Could it be from a CD &T shot? I would not think they would get that big but there is always a first I guess. I am so new to having goats but I have read posts, websites and books for over a year before I got my first ones. Could she have gotten ramed by another goat? I hope and pray for the best. If I was closer and there I would help out all that I could.

Don't know about the doe but about the buck. Some questions... By your name, do you have horses or have there been horses on the property? I was told by a vet many years ago that horse carry tetnus and it stays in the land for many years after horses are gone. If buck got scratched or even bitten (nipped) by a horse or fenceing, sound like he may be showing signs of tetnus.Has he had his CDT shots recently? When you say he is stiff can he move at all? We had a doeling that got tetnus many years ago and it was like she would made od wood, no movement except her head.

I'll try to get a pic of the doe in a few minutes .
And no ,it's not from a shot ,she hasn't had any since we've had her .
As for the buck ,he's 3 years old .
I was just out there and he is laying down ,so he can bend his legs . He's not tame so it's hard to mess with him much .
Yes we do have horses ,they're not pastured together but this was a Quarter Horse ranch many years ago I was told .
He can move his neck and head just fine , he just looks super sore . He baby steps everywhere and doesn't seem to be eating much . And then he has the snotty nose and making noises when he breaths .
I'll go out and take that pic now .Be right Back.

For the buck, try to get some B complex or Thiamine into him. Try to have someone get you some Banamine.
For the doe, even if you cannot see something, I would guess that she has a sticker or something in her side that is causing an irritation. easy way to tell is get a syringe and try to draw fluid out. If its yellow then you have an infection and it needs to be drained. If blood comes out then it is an injury.
Sounds like you have a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and introduce yourself, never know when something like an emergency comes up and you will need to know who to call.
It also sounds like others around you might have the drugs you need to help save your goats.
....... Also I don't think you have CAE or CL.
CAE tends to show more slowly, like they are aging before their time. Joints click, muscles are tight and sore.
CL like you said is in the Lymph glands..... 5 inches above the sore.

Thankyou ,I sure hope I'm not dealing with either CAE or CL !
We are the ONLY animal people around here .... We stick out like a sore thumb . In total farm country , beans and wheat for as for as the eye can see and then our little 40 acres full of critters ! hehe I don't think any of our neighbors even own a dog or cat ! Closest is 2 miles away .
Anyhow ,I will do my best to get him the B complex and Thiamine and of course the Banamine .
I don't have an needles but I'm sure scared to lance the lump because if it IS CL then of course I will have just potentially infected my property and/or goats. I'd love to get her to the vet and let them do it there or something .
My parents will be here Wednesday from MN and will help me with all of this . I sure hope my babies will get better soon ! And we were so excited because yesterday we had our first goats born here , twin Nubian/LaMancha doelings !

The breathing noises and snotty nose may be pneumonia and they can get all achey from it. I would give biomycin which is tetracycline and is at most feed stores. 3.5cc per 100 pounds of weight sub Q and from my experience if it's pneumonia it should be given for 9 days, once a day. Unfortunatly he's wild but taking his temperature would be good. If 104 or above and with the symptoms he has he needs antibiotics.
It's a bummer your car is down.
Ideal- fortified B's, high temp and not eating makes B-1 deficiency, kills rumen flora, so B's prevents polio and boosts immunity. Bo-Se helps immunity. Probios or yogurt at least everyday, drenched ,since antibiotics kill rumen bacteria. I also drench electrolyte water, about 2-3 quarts a day, if not drinking good.
