We are now official members of the club! [pic]

Heaven helps us - we're Goat owners!

Since the actual the transaction is behind us, I guess I can post pics of the three lovely Kinder kids that will be coming home with us (with their mom) around Sept. The mother was our main interest and we waited patiently to see what she kidded. As you can see, she surprised us with three kids - 2 doelings & 1 buckling. Mom is a first time freshner and has turned out to be a beautiful milker. For now, the family is staying with the breeder until the kids are weaned and mom is fully experienced on the stand. We visit weekends for our own lessons.

We are now official members of the club! [pic] - Goats

Naturally, we’re excited and scared to death. Almost like adopting an infant. As newbies, both to this forum community and to goat ownership, we’ll be looking to you for all kinds of support, and humbly ask the following:

- Please help us not to fret over the little things and not to overlook the big things.
- Please don’t berate too harshly when we make mistakes. We will.
- Please tolerate our lack of proper semantics, (though I note that “hoo-ha" seems to be a common term here ).
- Please sigh quietly, and answer for us, the very same questions that came up in a similar thread only a month ago. (We will try to “search” first).
- Please put up with our pictures and endless bragging that we clearly have here, the most beautiful goats on the planet, even though they look exactly the same as the one you saw last week.

…and could someone please tell me why in the world you all measure milk in pounds, and not liquid measures?

Thanks in advance. We look forward to getting to know you all.

LF & Rj

First: Welcome to your new goat addiction! Ummm, errr, I meant ownership! That's it!

You won't find a lot of berating on this forum...we just don't tend to roll like that. At worse, someone might say, "Well, my vet/mentor/whomever told me to do it this way, and although I am not saying your way is *wrong*, I don't think *I* would be comfortable practicing it." It seems somewhere down the line, we must have all taken classes in non-violent communication or something.

We ALL make mistakes, even people that have been doing this for 50 years make mistakes. You are less likely to be treated harshly here than have a bunch of people chime in with, "Oh, I did the SAME THING when I first got into goats, I am so sorry you had to deal with that!"

Semantics? We don't even police grammar here!

~grinz~ We have answered the same questions over and over again, without complaint, for years, and we don't mind it a bit. That is because each thread tends to bring up a tiny tidbit of new information.

We will not only put up with your pictures and bragging, we will DEMAND them! ~grinz~

The commercial industry measures milk in pounds rather than liquid measures, because measuring in pounds gives an accurate measure of milk density, which translate to milk value. A pint of milk that is rich in fats and proteins will weigh a little bit more than a pint of milk that is poor in fats and proteins and has more water.

Because the commercial industry does it, the show circuit and milk test people do it.

However, between you and me, I just use liquid measure at home.

Welcome to the wonderful world of goats! Yes you do have very beautiful goaties there.

Milk is measured in pounds because foam and such can make it appear like more when it is not and like has been said, butterfat will make it weigh more. A gallon of milk is 8.6 lbs. A gallon of water is 8.34 lbs. A gallon of gas ia around 6.2 lbs. A gallon of corn oil weighs about 10.7lbs. So you see, a gallon by volumn is much diffferent than a gallon by weight.

Congrats on your new adoption!! They are beautiful!
When we first picked up ours I was a basket case. Did we bring this, is that all ready where are we stopping for a quick bite to eat is the sun going to be in our eyes on the way home did you bring the cell phone did you check the tires did I bring the breeders phone#?
When I want to know something I never use the search I just ask away.
When they were finally here I worried more about them than I did raising human children.
However some of the little things say something isnt quite right...a tail or head down, standing with head in corner.
If you cant get the same brand of grain they are used to buy a couple bags from your breeder. Once they are settled in for a few weeeks then you can think about switching over (very slowly) if you need to.
And try not to be overwhelmed.

Thanks for the compliments. Minelson, we innately know that it's better to wait until were ALL ready for the move, but sometimes it's hard to wait for the weekends! Since you asked, Mom is pre-named - Hannah, so that's left to right - Verna, Nina and Otis. (Otis will be wethered. We're hoping to teach him to to pull, but he's mainly along for the ride as a brush eater, and for some "maleness" to balance things a little).

Congratulations on all your new little & big additions! September will be here before you know it & I know you all can hardly wait! Those babies are precious & I love the little wethers, they are actually my favorite as they seem to be the one's that are the most laid back all the time(at least in my experience).

Looking forward to many more pictures too!

Congratulations!

And don't believe Calliann. We're a bunch of opinionated goat addicts, and sometimes, it gets downright HEATED in here...

LOL!

Just kidding. Well, wait...

Many of us ARE opinionated. (Even me! Can you believe it?)

And while we may be addicted, we ARE helpful in enabling YOUR addiction.

Finally, yeah, sometimes the discussions can become intense, but we all learn, and overall, I do think there's a good deal of mutual respect. Because when it comes to goats, we all want what's best for our herds.

You are in for such a ride! Welcome aboard the Goatie Roller Coaster!

What? Are you saying that I'm not an opinionated, respectful goat addict?

How exciting! Triplets for her first time...WOW! They are beautiful! Goats are much easier than many other animals, so no reason to fret...and if you do have a concern, there are sooo many kind, helpful people here that have helped me and will help you, too.
My only warning is that goats can become an addiction if you don't watch it! I am curious to see how many you have this time next year!

Goats are like homemade, deep fried, seasoned potato chips...you can't have JUST 5. ~grinz~

And Pony, you are a respectful goat addict, but "opinionated" is a matter of degrees. I have YET to read you attempting to shove your opinion down someone's throat, with a tongue depressor when necessary to get it down...therefore, on the "opinionated" scale, I don't think you are up there with, say, O'Reilly or Maher.
