I am getting a Nubian on MONDAY!!

I will be getting a 1 year old Nubian doe on Monday!!!

I have never had a goat before! WHAT DO I NEED?? I am going to the feed store Saturday morning. What do I need to pick up as far as feed, supplements, and treats?
What kind of things should I NOT give her?

How exciting!! Congrats!! :banana02:

www.fiascofarm.com is a wonderful website full of goat information.

So you are only getting one goat? No goat friends waiting for her at your farm when she gets there? They are very much herd animals and unless she's used to being alone... I think she may be very lonely.

We love pictures... please post more when you get her home!

Val

We have 6 kids...so the chances of her getting a moment of piece is slim to none!! They have 5 does for sale (although someone is coming to look at them this weekend) so if she does seem to be to upset without a buddy we can go back and get another one.

Congrats to you! I also recommend the Fiascofarm website to get lists of things you will need. Even with your 6 kids she will still want company of her own species so you might as well pick up 2
Good treats are corn chips, animal crackers, raisins. Don't over due it though and change food slowly. Ask the people you are getting her from for some hay and/or feed to slowly transition her. Have Fun!!!

At the top of this goat forum is the thread- What is CL? What is CAE?
A good read.

I would get two - I've seen goats grief themselves to death - literally - without another with them, and at best, the goat will be very sad without another. . .

But beyond that - Congrats!

Get her a goat quality mineral, alfalfa hay/pellets (whichever), Blue Seal Caprine Challenger feed is my choice on a grain mix, some baking soda - mix it, if you like, in with the minerals or not.
As you learn more - you will need BO-SE, which is selenium/Vit E, from your vet, likely some copper boluses and you will want to draw blood for a CAE test through biotracking. Ideally, you'd have seen negative results prior to purchase, but when I started out, I didn't know what CAE even was or CL. . .so you do learn as you go.

Don't even mess around--get TWO goats. When I first started, I wanted *a* goat, but on the advice of everyone who knew anything I got two. It's a good thing I did, because Nubians sure can scream bloody murder if left alone!

Having lots of (human) kids to give attention is nice, but goats need a buddy pretty much 24/7. Unless your kids are planning to sleep in the barn.

What do you need?

YOU NEED ANOTHER GOAT.

Srsly.

As noted, Nubians are very vocal. They are also incredibly herd-oriented. Don't put yourself through the agony of a Nubian screaming piteously through the ENTIRE night.

I won't sell a kid to anyone unless they have another goat. When a neighbor wanted to buy one of my doelings, I offered to give him the wether so she would not be alone. He only wanted one, so I had to turn him away.

Please trust us on this one.

Get two.

Pony is right on the mark, a goat alone is an unhappy goat. They are a herd animal and need company of the same breed. Please please get 2.

Hi, new person here Back into goat ownership just recently after a couple decades away.

Even if they have 7 herd mates, Nubians sure can scream bloody murder. If they're bored, or a kid gets out of sight, water trough had a bug land in it, cloud looks like it might turn to rain... I don't want to think about the clamor one lonely one would make. If you or your neighbors within a mile radius plan on getting any sleep at night or peace in the daytime, get at least two. Doesn't have to be another expensive goat, a doe/ling or wether culled from someone's herd might be just the thing.

Don't get me wrong, I love Nubians Grew up around 'em and have 'em now. They can just be prissy prima donnas sometimes.

Otherwise, find out what she's eating now, if she's on browse or just hay, and when her feet were trimmed last. And if you don't already know about Jeffers Vet, look them up online and request a catalog. Good luck and most importantly have fun w/ your goat/s

Ok, ok....I was able to twist my husband's arm (over the phone after he just left the feed store) with your responses and he said "So you are saying I should have picked up TWO leashes instead of one?" Then he said "If it will make you happy then we can get TWO!"

What a good and wise hubby you have! I was going to add my voice to the "get two" chorus but by the time I got to the end the thread, you are already planning on it.

As far as the other stuff, you need a good, loose, goat mineral. You need hay. If one is im milk, you need alfalfa. You need water buckets and a container for the minerals and something to put the hay in. You need shelter for them. As far as goats are concerned, the only good water is water that is contained in a bucket, wild water (the kind in puddles, rain, and hose water etc,) should be avoided at all costs as they could potentially melt or drown or some such. They are usually more upset about wild water if it will make you run around trying to make them happy. If you are nowhere around, they will graze in a downpour.
