Sick goat

I know, I know I should have consulted someone earlier. Yell at me later. I have a 7 year old doe that showed signs of worm problems last week. She had a large lump under her jaw,eye lid white, the runs, not eatting her usual amount, normal temp. I wormed her with ivermectin and waited 24 hours to see what happened. Still had lump but bigger!, hanging head. Tried cydectin pour on (drench) still no help. Ordered Molly's herbal wormer, wormed everyone sat, sun and monday. Everybody except this doe doing great. She still has a small lump under jaw and still doesn't want to eat. Started her on corid and a terramycin bolus to try and stop the runs (looks like pancake batter, brown, not dark like blood). Did a fecal this morning and only saw 4-8 stomach worm eggs. Have run out of things to try. Vets are not available as they work the auctions on wed, thurs, and some times fridays and saturdays. What else can I try or do? I have had this girl since she was 2 days old, don't want to lose her. Also been giving her a B complex shot daily to combat the anemia.

You didn't say how much of each wormer you gave her and how much she weighs.

Does she have a fever?

Have you given her any ProBios?

Anything to slow down the runs? Pepto?

All the stuff you have given her has probably devastated her rumen and intestinal bacteria that she normally would have.

B complex isn't for anemia, but it might help her feel better.

Red Cell is for anemia.

Don't feed her any grain at all. Hay only. Is she drinking water?

fever? rumen noise?
Is she drinking? She should be getting atleast a gallon of water a day.
Can you get red blood cell?
Are you giving probiotics?

I didn't know that Vit. B can help anemia.... thats good to know
Don't kick yourself about the goat. Everybody has a problem, whether we will admit it or not. The good thing you did was to ask...

No fever, yes her ruman is working, she is eating hay and drinking water. Yes I have given her probios and I went to town today and got the red cell. She weights 150# so she got 7.5cc of ivermectin as a shot and I don't remember the cydectin but have it written down, vet had recently given me the doses to use. She has been eating apples yesturday and today,it's the only thing she will eat besides hay, will it give her the runs? B complex is all I had on hand and some iron is better then no iron and it helps soothe the tummy. Also gave her some comfrey tea, friend said it would help.

Ivomec is given to goats orally for deworming purposes, not via injection. 1 cc per 25 pounds

Cydectin (also oral) is 1 cc per 22 pounds.

I'm not understanding "some iron is better than no iron". What iron did you give?

Keep up the ProBios every day for a while. I think her gut is very distressed and de-populated of the good bacteria. The Terramycin is an antibiotic and doesn't act to slow diarrhea unless it was caused by certain bacteria.

Hay, ProBios, only soothing things. I'd stop the meds for a while.

Alice, some vets, due to new studies being done, are recommending injecting Ivomec injectable to goats nowadays.

Yeah, I know, it is new to me too. I asked about it down at the Vet College at A&M when a couple of people on here mentioned that their vets had told them to inject it. When i have more time, I'll get some particulars on the reasons for it; I haven't yet read the studies for myself.

WOW! I'd love to see those studies!

That's a big change.

I inject "Ivermectin Plus" and it has worked well; just make sure it is under the skin and not in a muscle.

If she were mine, I would stop all grains and all the medications except for Probios Paste (2-3 times) to aid her rumen for at least 24 hrs. Then I would dose her water with Sulmet. I would also wonder about her teeth and do what I could to find out if that lump under her jaw is related.

I was also wondering about a bad tooth, abcessed maybe? Or sometimes a thistle or picker can get lodged in there if it was in their hay?

I also give Ivermectin orally.
I would stop all grain, I would hold off on any more med's for a couple days other than Pepto Bismol & see if the runny poo stop's & how her eye lid's, etc. look then.
I would also give her electrolyte water & Hay.

Homemade electrolyte water is
1 liter water, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp. baking soda & 2 TBSP. sugar or honey

Keep us posted on her progress! Don't beat yourself up & no one should yell at you.

Valbazen was the drug of choice when our goat had bottle jaw. Bottle jaw looks like a big lump under their chin, in their neck, and is caused by worms. Ivermectin doesn't work fo rit, but valbazen does work. I hope your goat is better soon. It only took overnight to see a difference in our doe. Best of luck.

Sounds like a misprint and should have read thiamine instead of iron.
