Unhappy It's so hard...

Jezabelle's buck kid is getting sold for meat today. I have mixed feelings about it because he is such a sweatheart...he is always the first one to greet me and loves to cuddle and lay on my lap. Whenever I go outside he is practically glued to my leg...how could I not get attached to him?! Part of me really wanted to find a pet home for him but the other part of me knows that it makes no financial sense when I'd be lucky to get $40 for him as a pet wether and I can get over $100 in Dearborn...It was so hard hearing his cries from the back of the truck when my husband pulled out of the driveway...

i know it is hard. maybe it will help if you know he had the best life at your farm you could give him? think of all the poor animals that are mistreated before they go to the butcher. no love there.
we always cuddle with our bucklings that go for meat. we love them until they go, that is the least we can do.

Great post Susanne. I am truly blown away by the courage and strength those of you here have that let your goats go. For whatever reason.
I am sorry you are sad FunnyRiverFarm. hugs to you.

Thanks, Susanne...that's the way I am trying to look at it. He had a good life while he was here. I felt a bit better when my hubby got back and told me that he was calm after a few minutes in the truck and was happily munching leaves when he left him. I was so worried about him being stressed and frightened.

Minelson--it is hard letting go...but like I said in my OP it was the only reasonable option really. I could have sold him to a pet home for $40 and hoped that he would get the care and attention he deserved...or I could sell him to a nice Arabic family for humane slaughter for $125 (that's how much we ended up getting for him). With the cost of...well...everything, that extra cash helps me provide a better life for the other goats. Atleast I won't have to lie awake and wonder if he is being loved and taken care of, I suppose.

Funnyriver I know what you mean. And I too love on & name the ones going for meat. They deserve the best life we can give them while they're here.
Honestly I WOULD rather sell for that night's supper than wonder how they are doing.
I cant count the doelings I've sold with papers & never heard from the new owners again. And that bothers me at times.
