pepto patrol

i have 2 4 week old NDs does with scours and one 8 month old with the same thing. the little ones have been like this for 2 days and the big one for about 4 days. the little ones are from different mothers and are being dam raised. i did pepto this morning and closed off the browse area thinking maybe it was something the moms and the 8 month old ate.

there are 9 goats in that paddock together and only those 3 have scours, and there is another 4 week old on one of the mothers that has no problems. all goats have free choice hay, minerals, and baking powder. other than browse coming in there has been no change in diet for any of them. can goats pass around a stomach bug like humans? i just cant put my finger on what could be causing this. 3 unrelated goats out of 14 total have scours at the same time with no change in diet to anyone.

it has been pretty rainy here and there is standing mud in the yard but most of the paddock is dry, hay is dry and barn is dry. just wondering if because it has been raining every couple of days maybe they picked up some sort of bug? i scrubbed the barn yesterday and plan on re-cleaning it today (lot of wet poop in there).

other than runny poop all of them are acting normal, well, as normal as goats act. the kids are running around and hoping on everything and the other girl is doing what she normally does. all are still peeing clear but i am picking up some electrolytes when i got out. i havnt got a temp yet but will later today (have some errands to run before i get all poopy).

any thoughts?

i wormed and bolused everyone recently too so that is all up to date. the kids were disbudded and cdt already too. as far as i can figure everything is how it should be except 3 of my babies got the runs.

What are you doing for coccidiosis? I would start treating them for that disease ASAP.

I agree - first thing that comes to mind is Cocci.

am starting treatment for cocci today, never thought of that......sooo much to remember!!!

2 of them seem to be all better, poop normal today and no temp (102 for the 8 month old and one of the 4 week old)

the other baby temp was 103.4 so she got electrolytes and some more pepto. going to do sulmet treatment starting today.

never had a problem with that much runny poop before, only time a goat was sick like that was when one of the wethers got into the chicken feed and had diarrhea for a day.

does cocci "bloom" like that normally or is it more a persistent condition?

going to start with mollys herbal stuff too i think

I think it will "bloom" especially in wet weather. It's always around and I think every goat has it in the gut.

What are you using to treat it? In case this is your first time treating it make sure to use the treatment dosage and not the preventive dosage.

If they start fighting you mix a little sugar in it.

I always do a cocci prevention on all kids born here starting at 3 weeks of age & doing it every 3 days for 5 days.

It also sounds like coccidiosis to me too. Rain & all the wet ground etc. will make it worse like fishead said.

A dose or 2 of pepto won't hurt them either but keep of the cocci treatment. Not sure how well Molly's herbal wormer or cocci med's will work though since they are already having the problems especially.
