CL positive

I have always been careful where my goats go. I have always been careful when I go to someone elses place or they come to mine, but I got lazy and brought home new packgoats from a guy that I knew. I noticed a bump a day later when I shaved him down. I drew blood and sent it out.
So the test came back on my new packgoats. One is CL positive, so he is going back to where he came from tonight.
I am telling everyone this to warn you. I got him from a family that had tested a year ago, all his goats were negative. I now have a "potential exposure" to my own goats, but thankfully there are no open sores on the positive goat, and he does not have a cough, so its unlikely that my property is contaminated. Please TEST BEFORE you bring new goats into your herd.

Thankyou for the warning.
This is from Tennesee Meat Goats site, 'A simple and inexpensive blood test can be performed to diagnose infection. There are several testing methods, but they are unreliable on animals under eight months of age; "false negatives" are high, particularly on goats showing no visible signs of infection. The most accurate testing is done on exudate (pus) taken from the abscess itself.'
So if the goat was younger it could have had a false negative when that guy tested his herd.
Sure is good you caught it so quick.

I am warning myself most... I can't believe I got so relaxed about being cautious because this is flat out my biggest nightmare. I trusted that the test done a year came back negative, so he was either exposed after that or it was a false negative. I AM GLAD that I isolated and tested... I am sorry for the goat. He is a sweetie. He was a LaMancha buck until a year or so ago, when they wethered him for packing. He is about 5 years. I am just kicking myself because, as all of you know, this is a self-inflicted kick in the gut. "I should have requested a test before I took him".
BTW: I really like all the information that Tennessee meat goats has... very educational. And I do want to thank all here on this forum because of all the experiences shared is how others learn....

I am very sorry that happened!
I will say that testing is not reliable unless the goat actually has an external or internal
abscess. A goat can easy test negative and actually have CL but have no active abscesses.

It's also along with CAE, pinkeye, soremouth, lice, super worms, cocci, bloat/acidosis from feed change, pnemonia, mastitis etc...why quarantine of new goats is so key. Its to bad all the preaching on bio-security went away with the mad cow conversations. Vicki

My biggest fears are CAE, Johne's, and CLA.

Many of the others can be a hassle, become very infectious to the herd, but can be treated mostly with success. But these 3....there is no cure...

We are on yearly testing. To date, not one customer has asked to see the test results. They are either taking me for my word on my website, or they simply don't care. I suspect it's the latter.

I'm sure your reminder will help others to remember, I'm glad you posted, and sorry for the exposure to your herd.
