Backyard Goats

I was just wondering if I am the only one who has backyard goats on here? We have two goats in a suburban part of the San Diego area. We are just barely beyond the city limits by a mile or so. We own them for family milk purposes and are hoping to buy a couple acres or so in future so we can have some more. We are also looking into starting a community herd amongst our homeschooling groups. Where we each takes turns on different days to milk and feed. Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone else on this forum has similar purposes for their animals in a city-type setting.

We have back yard goats too. They are for milk. We live in a sub devision well north of Atlanta. We have very nice live and let live neighbors. We also have back yard chickens, bunnies and a pheasant. We are looking for 5-10 acres north of us. We homeschool also.

I also have a goat in the back yard. Most folks here have milk or meat goats. My Sweetpea has no real breed to her but one heck of a weed eater[even poison ivy]. I do live in the country but on a two lane highway. I only have one acre but she is on a very long chain attached to a tractor tire. When she gets bored where she's at I just roll the tire somewhere else. She's a useful pet.

I suppose my goats would qualify as backyard goats, since we only have one acre, and are in a subdivision (but a lot of our neighbors have at least a horse or something on their lots).

I have backyard goats too...but they change status and wander into the front yard, carport, driveway to investigate visitors, front porch steps, side yard, woods etc ) If I go out to the yard swing, I'll have a 230 lb "lap" goat...well, he tries. Gotta love those bottle babies who still remember being fed while being held in you lap.

Currently, yes, but once our fences are up the will not be backyard goats, they will be browsers and it may almost eliminate our hay bills.

We have backyard goats. We are within city limits but it is a wide spot in the road town and a lot of people in town have livestock. There is everything from poultry,to horses,to cows,to goats,to llamas in this town. They passed a critter control law a year or so ago, but no one in town paid any attention to it.

I tried to start goats in a snottin' little town in Utah. The city council woman had goats, but a neighbor of mine was jealous and complained so the city dug up an ordinance that they claimed held over the one the city councilwoman used. They let me keep the kids until they were weaned. That was nine years ago. I still have one of the original goats (lost the other in kidding this year), but am so glad that I no longer live there. Now I have 1.5 acres, no direct neighbors, and lots more goats. The "city" I live in has two stop signs, an elementary school, John Deere dealer, Good Year Tire shop, but no grocery store or post office; gas is available at the John Deere dealer. I do love it out here.

We have a post office, a itty bitty, tinie tiny, grocery store, dollar general an elementary and high school. We don't have a single traffic light and the whole town is about a mile by a mile. Its the largest town in the county and is the county seat so we even have a court house here.

Even so, we countinue to look for our place in the country.

we do live in the country, 16 acres, and my goats are backyard types. i am careful to treat them like high-style girls, and bought does with very good milking potential, but don't have any plans to show or make big-time sales. DH was talking of going more that way, but the more i think of it, the more i really like being 'little'.

Oat Bucket and Eunice I love the sound of your town! I guess you could say that the town I live near is similar, a post office, a pizza place, 2 has stations, the county buildings and the school, oh and a seasonal museum. However everything closes by 8 or 9, it is home and I love it!

Yep by 8 pm they have rolled up the streets around here. The Dollar General just opened and the big exciting news for our little town is that they are open from 9am to 9pm SEVEN days a week. The grocery store is open from 10am to 6pmSundays and open until 8pm the rest of the week.
