Tattooing question

Do you skip numbers if you don't register some kids or do you just not acknowledge them and only number regsitered (or soon to be registered) kinds in succession?

I Don't skip...I never thought about it though! Maybe there is a reason I don't know about that I should skip?

I don't know. I have some buck kids that are getting banded and so I'm wondering if I should skip them in number since they won't be registered. I know there's no rule for it either way, just wondering what the best thing to do it.

I don't skip. Any kid that makes it full term is assigned a number. That helps later for me to know how many kids were born in one year. So far we are up to A94. We've actually had 99 full term kids born this season but 5 were born the last week of December, so they were Z108, Z109, Z110, Z111 and Z112. Only Z111 will be recorded (May's daughter).
As you know, very few of mine get registered/recorded. More than half are sold for meat (wethers) and more than half of the does are Boer cross and don't get registered either.
On the other hand, Sally only used numbers on the kids that were to be registered. The ones that weren't, and the one that died were not assigned numbers.
With the cows, heifers are always assigned a number in the sequence and only bull calves that were kept for breeding are assigned numbers. All the bull calves destined for meat are not assigned numbers.
It all comes down to how you want to do it. The only hard and fast rule is that no two kids have the same tattoo sequence with your herd tattoo sequence ever. They have to be unique to your herd.

I tattoo every kid that is born, regardless of whether or not it will be registered. For instance, I had a litter of three kids: two bucks, one doe. I am only registering the doe, unless I have someone willing to pay the money for a registered buck kid. The doe is "A3", the bucks are A1 and A2.

I don't. I only count the kids I will be registering. Meat bucklings or stillborns do not get counted in the tattoo list. I think its just personal choice.

I assign a tattoo number to each live birth on the e-spreadsheet. I only tattoo the ones that I will register.

That's what I did, for my own records.

I did the same too. I tattooed the doe that I registered and assigned the buck a # but didn't tattoo him until someone wanted to buy him as a buck and needed him registered, then I tattooed him.
