Oh thank you all so much. I made a mistake in doing something I KNEW was wrong. I should have studied up more on goats before we got one. My intention was to get a nanny for milking. Then we decided to get two, a male and female from different families, so we could breed them and milk the nanny. We went to the Mennonite animal sale for 2 pigs and 2 goats. I picked out the pigs and Chris took care of the goats. It turned out they only had 2 kids that were brothers for $25 each. I did not want 2 brothers, as I was well....ignorant.... and decided to get one of them and find a female for him in the next few weeks. So we got him and did not have time that day to go talk to the man who sold him at the market. Although I did take time to get his name and find out where he lived in the community in case I needed to see him. So now after the fact, I discover I have no clue WHAT kind of goat he is and then people start telling me I cannot get a female his age as they will breed too early and she needs to be a year old and well...all of the things I should have researched before getting a goat to begin with.
So I do intend on getting a female and do intend on letting the two breed. I got a mineral lick for goats and am feeding him goat feed plus he has a huge area with LOTS of vegetation to roam around in freely, lots of fresh water and such. He is a sweet little thing and I am on the lookout for another goat so I can get one as soon as possible. I will check out the links and plan to spend time reading the goat forum as much as possible the next few days.
I appreciate the replies in this thread. Hopefully I will find a friend for him very soon, meanwhile we uh....are addicted to our new pigs and goat and spend probably more time than we should with them right now. We spend hours a day with the goat and make sure we visit the pen MANY times a day, lay down and talk to and pet the goat (and pigs) and give him treats and attention. The day after we got him his pellets started clumping together. Now they are normal again.
I hope to learn as much as I can about his care and he will be treated just as good as the other spoiled animals on our farm. I will make a trip over to talk to the man that sold him this weekend and find out as much as I can about him, his diet and such.
Thanks so much everyone.
EDIT: printed out the info on the website and another one on Alpine Goats and will read them when I get home tonight. Thanks
