We lost her

We lost our sweet Sadie this morning. Another doe started coming down with the same symptoms last night. I have wormed everyone who has kidded in the last 2 weeks as I know they have worms (don't need a fecal to know that). I checked their gums and they where pale. Until now Sadie had never been sick a day in her life on our farm. She was one of our hardiest girls. She was one who always had a home here. I am thankful my mom could be with her in the end.

I don't know what pulled Sadie under so fast but I know worms didn't help. Normally I am on top of worming but work has been insane stressful so things have been slipping by that shouldn't have. I don't believe it was worms that brought her down so fast but like I said worms didn't help. Our other girl is looking better after worming from last night. Not sure if that is just my imagination or it is true.

Sadie was a special girl and before my mom owned her she was my baby. I bottled raised her and she was my special lady. There is a huge hole in our hearts and our herd where our big black girl used to be. Her triplets are being bottle raised now (thank goodness they are easy to get on the bottle!).

Thank you Susanne for answering my questions. I just wanted to let you girls know.

RIP my dear sweet girl. I will miss your gentleness and the way you always had the biggest heart. You where a true gentle giant and a true lady to the core. Even in your last few moments you where such a great mother (when she was laying on the ground during the last few minutes we had her with us one of her kids cried and she lifted her head to talk to her).
We lost her - Goats

I'd guess it was hypocalcemia.
It hits hard and fast

Sorry you lost her

A few years back we lost a favorite doe..Daphne.. She had kidded triplets that year and then she began having very loose stools..To the point it was running out of her like a hose was running.. The vet had me worm her and I believe it might have been harsh for her ..then she died also. This year had a doe that had clumpy nanny berries and wormed everyone with Ivermectin inject, and then a precaution did the Corid in the water..and then when the kids were born did the Safeguard wormer for horses..double the horse dose. They and this doe seem much better. Sorry about your doe..I truly understand.

We lost our Sheepski last year to prolapse and subsequent uterine tearing.
It hurt so much. She was our most precious ewe. A total cuddle bug. We still miss her.

So sorry for you.

I just.....I haven't cried yet. I think I am kind of in shock? 2-3 days ago she was fine and dandy and now she is gone. I was at work so I was unable to say goodbye. I have to go out and milk tonight at it is going to be SO hard to be out there without her there. My mom said that she found Sadie's daughter Ducky laying next to her body . Of the triplets Ducky was the most attached to her mom.

It just breaks my heart in to pieces. Even to the end Sadie was attentive to her kids. I have a yearling daughter of hers that is mine and my mom will be keeping Ducky back. Her yearling daughter is standard and Ducky is a mini. I know tonight when I am alone I will bawl my eyes out. Probably while I am milking. It is such a great hole in my heart and so sudden. It feels like this is a dream and I will go out and see her standing there waiting for grain. It happened SO sudden. It started out the morning she was off feed and within 2 days....... Sorry....I just miss her so much and can't wrap my head around it.

I found out that my dad found her out in the field and had to drag her all the way into the barn (she was a big 160-170 pound doe) and when they got her in she was cold and moaning. You knew she was on deaths door. Her eyes where sunken in and she was dying. My dad was even more shook up than my mom. He loved that girl and she was kind of his baby. She was my mom's doe but my dad will milk sometimes and he babied her. It is affecting us all....

Justine
ps: Bearfootfarm, we treated her for ketosis and hypocalcemia. We gave her probiotics, B Vitamin Complex, and everything we could think of to help her. But nothing helped it seemed. Last night when we dosed her I felt her nose/mouth was cold and I knew she was doing worse than we thought. But I hoped and prayed I was wrong.

Me too. And the rest of what you said about her talking to her kids the last moments.
When we had to put down one of our first does her two sisters walked along the the outside of the kidding barn looking up at it wailing for her. It broke my heart worse than for just myself. That was 5 yrs ago & it still makes me tear up.
Dogone it these goats are suppose to be livestock.

I sure do know the "hole in the heart" feeling. I hope that, given time, you will be able to think of Sadie in terms of the good memories. I'm sure you already know that you and your folks did all you knew to do for her. (((hugs)))

My heart is with you in your loss. I lost a nine year old doe a month ago, and the tears are still here. She was such a big part of our family doings, and her twin sister still misses her - bawls, and smells me all over every time I go into her pen, even after borrowing a yearling to keep her company. I lost Carmel to a hard kidding with triplets. But I did get three nice kids, one of which I am keeping.
