HELP! I found a sore!

I'm freaking out! This evening my daughter brought to my attention a "crusty" spot on our 6 week old bucklings inner thigh. After cleaning all the gooy hair away from it.. well... this is what I found...

HELP! I found a sore! - Goats

I cleaned it with an iodine solution and put A&D cream over the spot. He's not running a fever... eating well.... acting normally.

This buckling was born on our farm, we tested negative for CAE and have never had any CL occurances.

What could it be? There are lots of little sores leading away from it... could it be some sort of bite??????

Thanks for all your help!
Val

Oh my gosh........I dont know. First---Is the "white things" bone ? It kindda looks like bone to me. 2---Do you see any worm larva? Load a syringe (no needle attached) with peroxide, stick it in the "holes", and squirt the perixide into the wound. You MAY just find larva wiggling out. Be ready----it is gross. Get a good pair of twizzers to get hold of the larva, cause you may just have to pull on them GENTLY!!! If you get anything out, put triple antibiotic cream into the wound, and give a dose of Pen G . Repeat daily until you are sure there are no more larva. Once they are all gone, you'll see the wound begin to scab over and that "runny, puss crust" will start to vanish. The little "sores" leading away from the big sore is where the larva eat up thru the skin. I hope I am wrong, BUT I doubt it. I had this happen to a lamb a few years back....called the vet. I wish I could remember what "fly larva" he told me it was, but alas, that was years ago. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

PS.....get an extra set of hands to help ya.....it is too hard to hold the baby, squirt the peroxide, watch for larva, and inject medicine.....

Are there any punctures on the other side of the joint? Looks like teeth marks. Something bit the stifle or knee joint.

I cover a suspect wound with vaseline to look for maggots. The maggots cant breath after a minute and back out.
No matter what i would do a maggot check.
That wound could easily attract flys as open as it is. I hope it isnt a flystrike prob. Its so gross when larva get inside living creatures. Yuk!

I would keep a triple antibiotic on that too because thats a wound waiting for infection.

He have a CDT yet?
I would worry about tetanus too with the reason for this being unknown.

No bite or wounds on the other side of this joint.
He had a CD&T shot on April 11th.

I have to be at work SUPER EARLY.. before the sun comes up. I asked my daughter to look at the wound this morning and she seems to think it looks better. Less red/inflamed.

I'm going to call the vet and see if I can email him the picture.... might be an odd request but then again... might not be in this "day and age."

When I get home tonight, should I give him a tetanus toxoid? I have that on-hand from when we disbud.

Thanks so much everyone!!

Looks like a bite wound to me- bite wounds are insidious because of the bacteria residing within. they are hard to get rid of. Could be four legged bite, could be eight legged bite-

I've used Pen, for about 10 days to help clear up the bacterial infection. And a tetanus booster would not hurt either. Maybe some Cut Heal sprayed on for topical protection.

From the pic, I'm thinking it looks like larvae.

Either way, I'd follow Luv2farm's advice and flush the wound with either peroxide or Betadine flush (NOT wash).

Treat topically with triple antibiotic ointment -- NOT creme. The ointment is an occlusive that will keep flies out of the wound.

I'd boost with Vitamin B injectable.

Keep an eye on it. Clean/dress the wound as needed.

My vet allows me to email photos for her opinion all of the time. I do that in this case for sure.
Everyone has already given any advice I would have offered.

I washed it with iodine scrub, flushed the larger holes with peroxide and applied vaseline to the wound. He got injections of tetanus toxoide and PenG.

I sent the vet pictures of the sore but haven't gotten any feed back.

Here's what it look like this evening... I think the pink/red skin is a good sign? Fresh skin healing... I hope

Makes ya sure wonder what might have caused it, though we will probably never know.

Glad to hear he is better.
