banamine for meat goats?

I need to band a 2 month old meat buckling. I think I should give him something before I do it, poor guy. I've never used banamine before, so I dont know how to give it. I've heard it is approved for beef cattle only intravenously. Is the same true for meat goats? I dont know how to give iv injections.

I've always heard to use a 10 day withdrawal time for meat and 3 days for milk, so as long as you don't plan to butcher inside of 10 days I think you're fine with IM.

I've banded at 8 weeks before. Mine were Minis, though... you sure a boer buckling will still... erm... fit? hehe. I didn't use banamine... The boys would holler a bit and lay down alot, but none seemed to terribly worse for wear after a couple hours.

He'll fit... but I do worry about him being in a lot of pain, since he's so old and... large.

Sometimes I do the lamanchas at 8 weeks, I band them, give them their CD&T and out them back in the pen. Some flop around and act like their dying, others are more manly and act as if nothing happens.

I wouldn't give him anything. I am new to goats and have never banded a buckling but I have banded bull calves and we never give them anything. It is just like putting a rubber band around your finger. A little discomfort at first but goes numb quickly. I have also seen what banamine does to the meat and its not pretty. I have also never heard of it given iv, but I dont really know the way it is supposed to be given.

It would be more humane to use the blade on this kid. It is also the lowest risk procedure (tetanus and other complications). There is a TV Show (Dirty Jobs, I think) where the guy wants to band the sheep rather than cut, as per the ASPCA. He quickly realized that cutting was much better than banding. There is a YouTube where the main guy is doing a motivational talk and recaps this episode (what I saw, not the TV show). Very eye-opening.

Banamine can be used in all breeds of goats - 1cc/100lb of goat.

We do not use any pain medication for disbudding or castrating. The goats are fine.

The blade... yikes! I've never done it or seen it, and I'd be very nervous to try without anyone there to help. I dont know anyone who does it, either. Everyone I know uses the bander or the burdizzo.

I usually dont use pain meds for stuff like this, but I also usually dont band 8 week olds. Course, others say that its fine, so...

Yes, I have banded 8 week olds. No, I have never had any issues. And no, I never give pain meds for banding. They act uncomfortable for about 30-60 minutes, then they are fine. They will be uncomfortable for a little while no matter what form of castration you choose.
