Congested udder

My doe has a hard, tight, lumpy udder after kidding. I did the CMT test and one side tested as "suspicious", though I understand that this can be normal for goats and is not necessarily indicative of mastitis.

I've been milking her twice a day, get about a quart each time, plus she is feeding her kids. But even after I milk her, her udder seems to remain full. I massage her udder twice a day with Molly's Aches n' Painz salve which is a similar product to their mastitis salve.

Any other suggestions?

I had the same problem last year with one of my does except I was getting nothing from her at first. I had read to feed her parsley, as much as she wants. I also milked her 4 times a day at first and massaged her udder. After about 4 days she was no longer congested.
Good luck!

When did she freshen? Does can keep some edema in their udder for a good 2 weeks after they kid. I would suggest doing the same thing a human would do if her breast were congested; warm wash clothes, massaging and even cabbage leaves placed on the udder.

We are having this problem with ours too. No mastitis just congested. We are on day 2 now. We are going to try parsley and we have given her vitamin C and warm water and tea tree oil massages. For those that have had it any other ideas? And how long did it take to clear up? Thanks!

It's a normal hormonal response, and one I experienced after giving birth also. It takes about a week to clear.

Patt, is the udder actually have no milk in it? Or is it just not wanting to come out? We had a FF that had one side that the milk just would not come out. We had to really squeeze to get it to come out and then finally it would break loose. That stopped after about a week or so after she freshened.

Oh and to the OP, I've heard those mastitis tests aren't accurate right after they kid.

It's loosened up some this morning. The kids are nursing and we are massaging. We did see a definite difference after the first big bunch of parsley so it does work. We are supplimenting the kids for now too just to be safe.

6e it has milk it just doesn't want to come out.

We had that same problem with our FF Oberhasli doe. We just massage and SQUEEEEZE. LOL After about the first week or two it clears up and now it milks pretty easy. No mastitis in it, just hard to get the milk out.

Does she do that every year? Or was it just a one time thing? The lady I got Susie from said she didn't have the problem last year so I am wondering if there is a supplement she needs? Parsley is definitely helping but I don't know why.

I don't honestly know. We just got her and she is a FF, so I'll get back with you on that next year. LOL

Just wanted to post that parsley is amazing stuff. We gave her a bucketful and within a couple of hours her udder started loosening up. Gave her another bucketful the next morning and again she cleaned it up. By that afternoon she was making definite progress and by that evening she was milking freely. So from now on we will have parsley growing in quantity for when they kid! I had a friend with the same problem and she tried parsley too and saw a marked improvement.

Are you talking just plain parsley from a grocery store? I've got the same problem with one of my does.

That's what my friend used. We happened to get some from the garden but she got hers from the grocery. Takes about 2-3 good sized bunches.

Have you noticed how the kids "punch" their dam's udders? This is to help loosen the milk to get it to flowing down to them.

I have often done a similar thing with first fresheners (some even with older does immediately after kidding). I just squeeze the nipples hard (never pulling down on it) to open the hole in the teats and milk some out to get it started.

Nice to know about the parsley!
