My Boy's Getting Neutered

I finally found a vet who will do it in my area - I cannot do it myself! He is going to give him a local anesthesia and then put a ring on, I assume this would be banding? He says that by the time the anesthetic wears off, the scrotum should be numb and he won't feel much pain. I've read some articles/posts that say banding is inhumane, but I think doing it with the anesthesia will be better. I feel better about it anyway!

Banding is so quick and they cry more over being restrained than anything else. Usually within minutes they are back to running and playing like nothing happened.

LOL - he said commercially it is done without anesthesia and there is another type he said that a tool is used to cut off the blood supply to each testicle, but I guess because Jumper is a pet and the vet knows I don't want to cause him any pain (or at least as little as possible) he is offering the anesthetic. I assume most people do it themselves and he gets very few requests! But these babies were a complete surprise to us - we got the mama 5 months ago and were told she was in heat when we got her, but apparently not. There is no way we could do it ourselves - my husband used to watch his dad "pinch" their bulls when he was a kid and said there was no way he was doing it!

My step-dad always calls me when castrations are needed. He buys these 400-600lb bulls, runs them into a shoot, and I use a SmartBander on them while he stays out of sight!

Must be a guy thing, castration does not bother my daughter or I, but sends men running and grabbing their crotches, lol.

The other tool your vet is talking about is a Burdizzo ( emasculator) you crush the cords on both sides. Takes a hand strength I do not have, but it is useful to threaten people with My son and his friends have run from me when I am holding it.

My boys do not cry during banding. My daughter holds them and feeds them crackers while I get the hind end of that deal afterwards some act like they are going to die, others lay on the ground sticking their heads down there seeing if they can get it off and some act like nothing has happened. Depends on how bad a drama queen he is. Castration I can handle, disbudding I cannot!

Good to hear that there isn't as much pain involved with this as I've read in some articles. Makes me feel much better. If I knew someone to do it other than the vet, I probably would have just had it done, but no such luck. I need a mentor to teach me these things - lol!!!!

If I would have been able to find someone to do it with a local I would have done it that way too. My Frankie was banded and disbudded at the same time! I felt soooo bad for him. He was back to doing handstands and backflips in no time though...

A local anesthetic - I would assume something like Xylocaine - topical or injected into the area.

Definately a guy thing. Bothers me not a bit but I have guy friends who can't watch or if they do, they turn a little pale. I also have guy friends who band all their calves and never think twice about it.

People do things differently when they think of their livestock as pets....
People who think of all animals as livestock do things a bit differently as well.
It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.
