Question What to feed new buckling?

We are picking up our new buckling next weekend. He was born Feb 26th. So he will be 10 wks. Does he need grain or other feed? Or is just hay, alfalfa or bermuda? I have both. I will call and ask the lady more detailed questions about what she's feeding, but I wanted everyones input.

He is adorable! We feed babies starting at 3 weks to a month old a 16% medicated boer goat grower and free choice grass hay and mineral and baking soda.

What is it medicated with? I will have loose minerals and baking soda out, I just forgot to add it. We have them out for my girls and I planned on putting them out for him too.

It should have both ammonium chloride to prevent urinary stones and a chemical to reduce coccidia.

Please note: The ammonium chloride level may not be enough to prevent the urinary stones. You may want to add a bit of powdered ammonium chloride topdressed on his feed.

I keep kids on dam/bottle till 12 weeks at least. Doelings I leave on longer. If he's on bottle, I'd continue it. If not, he CAN be weaned at 10 weeks easily. I'd keep a LITTLE grain in front of him, mostly free choice quality grass hay and pasture, though. Add AC to minerals and top dressed in grain. I wouldn't feed grain after he hits 3.5-4 months, though. Keep the AC in mineral mix, but he shouldn't need as much as when eating grain.

I have two doelings a day older than your boy. I've checked and rechecked the math.. my girls will only be 7 weeks this weekend. Is my math wrong?

I'm only mentioning it because your boy won't even be 8 weeks yet this weekend and you might want to hold off on weaning. My girls get free choice hay, grain, and their bottles (which is currently a mix of goats milk and cow).

Good luck with him, he's a cutie!!

No your math is fine, I apparently can't count weeks on the calendar! I will check with the lady I bought him from and see if I can leave him an extra week.
We were planning on picking him up on the 23rd. Next week end not this one. But still that may be a little young.

Thank for helping me with my math!
