ADGA rant

It costs as much to register a goat with ADGA as it does a dog with AKC! Livestock is supposed to be cheaper! How can it be right to charge 15% of the goats total value, when the DOG can be registered for the same price and 3% M/L of the value.
(Side note: Recently received a package from them that said "non-profit org" in the stamp corner)

I recently registered to kids and it didn't cost that much to do it. I think the total was $26 or close to that for both kids together. I didn't thing that was bad. Are you registering as a member or non-member? That will make a difference as well.

Livestock is supposed to be cheaper? Is that true?

According to my paperwork, it's $7.50.

Edited to add: My form was old. It's $9.50.

I just sent in a bunch of paperwork today, it still saved me an extra $9.00 in fees after paying for my $26 renewal membership fee, verse registering as a non-member. $8.50 for a doe kid, I don't think that's bad. Of course if I had just done it last week - $7.50, but I always miss that date! I think it's about 2x's a much for non-members.

I don't think they are high, at all.. I know I'm not paying anywhere near 15% of my goats' value to register them... I love being able to go online.. type in my info and INSTANTLY have my kids registered..

I prefer AGS - better prices, and the service I have received from them as been top notch!

Where are you getting a set 15% of value, or are you saying your doe is worth $50. If that is what you mean, then I'd say you got a bargain.
I personally am glad for all the services they provide. Shows, pedigree info, registration, marketing, LA, etc... and when one of my animals comes up in the government dairy database as a superior genetic animal, they pay for DNA testing on the Sire, Dam and Kid at no charge to me.

Just like having an AKC registered dogs, having ADGA registered animals also means that I can get more for my animals when I sell them. Here a grade would sell for $25, but with registration, I get several hundred. Well worth the $8.50 I pay.

I love being able to register them online too! It makes things much easier. I just wish you could scan service memos and send them in so you could register the kids online.

The owner of the buck can now file service memos online with ADGA. I used one of my parents' bucks last fall, and had them file the memo online. When the memo is filed online, you get an email with the memo number. When you go to register your kids online, all you do is type in the memo number and the online application automatically has sire and dam information. All you have to do is enter the kid information. It is nice that there is a dollar discount for registering kids online as well :-) It makes ADGA's work easier, so they use that as an incentive. Another bonus is that in registering a kid online, I get the paperwork back in less than a week.

It doesn't sound like much when you are talking about a kid or three, but when you put it off like I do, then try to play catch up with MANY it is shocking! LOL.

Wags - AGS only allows purebreds though...
NBF - wrong math. 15% of $150 is $22.50, and it's only $9.00. So It's not too much, but why charge more for bucks? That's absurd.

I don't think it is to bad (although it still kills me!). What does drive me insane is that it costs more to send your papers in than do it online BUT you can not register American Grade online. I had a doe who was American LaMancha but I had to send her papers in via post office rather than online because online wouldn't recognize her as being American. So it cost me more. That I was a wee bit annoyed at but other than that I am happy.

I LOVE how you get their registered number right after you do the online paperwork. So nice!

Bucks cost more to register because you automatically get a four generation pedigree with the registration. If you want a four generation pedigree with a doe, it is optional, but the registration would cost the same if you requested that four generation pedigree.

You can register Americans and grades online. Even though it doesn't say American, ADGA has the American information in their database. I register my American Saanens online.

1st generation grades cannot be registered online though, because the dam and sire have to already be in the ADGA database. The only drawback to online registration, otherwise, I love it!!
And yes, I think that ADGA is quite reasonable for what they offer. As said, bucks cost a bit more, because you get a bit more for your money.

But by that same logic, the buck is part of your herd, (half of it), and so they get you on. And I thought the pedigree always came with it?

Not sure what you are saying about the buck..? But no, you have to order the extended pedigree for does if you want it, and it costs a bit more. It automatically comes with buck papers(you get the regular pedigree that is on the papers, plus another sheet of paper with extended pedigree).

After just paying $50 to get a colt registered with APHA, ADGA seems like a real bargain. It's AQHA and APHA that are the real rip offs. They don't even have the free online pedigree looks ups or anything like ADGA, much less something equivalent to appraisal.

I just hope ADGA doesn't go the way of other registries with ever increasing costs.

So do they automatically come with that two gen pedigree? And what I'm saying is, mostly, I'm just comtemplating getting 15 goats transferred as well as who knows how many registrations.

EDIT: Oh, and not to mention that it's a pain to get registered with ADGA so that we can even start to send them more money. Apparently they spent bookoo bucks (pun intended) to get the program setup that everyone hates.

Transfers are only $5.50 or $4.00 depending on how long you procrastinate. Yes bucks automatically come with the pedigree. Does do not. I just registered 7 kids, and transfered a doe, that was expensive enough. What I like is with the little wethers I can send a wether certificate app with the new owners, tattoo the kid and not worry about where to put the scrapies tag in the ear less little fellers.
