Disbudding

I might have to find someone else to disbud my newest baby. Does anyone here use a vet to do it and if so how much does it usually cost? My cousin usually does mine, but I think he'll be out of town.

Most people seem to have bad luck with their vets doing it. I would call your local 4H and see it they know someone. Most people charge under $30

vets around here bad luck and very expensive. 2 years ago I was quoted at disbudding being $69 each!! I learned real quick to do my own! (our 4H leader showed me how and then coached my first.)

Good luck!

With my first baby, I posted an ad on CL and a very nice lady came to my house and disbudded my baby for free. She was wonderfully knowledgable and patient, answering all my questions and going slowly. This year, thanks to her, I felt confident enough to try myself.

I didn't check the vets, and wouldn't bother around here. I called for pricing on wethering a goat and they wanted to charge $75 and up (depending on size). The goat wasn't worth $10 to me so.. no thanks.

I would check with breeders in the area before calling a vet. I would also ask whoever is doing it if they have done it before on baby GOATS and have the right equipment to do it

It's only a couple of bucks for our vet assistant, but then they tack on office visit ($25 or so) or farm visit costs.
It's why I learned to do it myself. When you are looking at 100+ kids, it can get expensive in a hurry!

Our vet only does 'surgical' removal and not burning-disbudding. We had to have several redone last year though and did the surgical thing thinking it would be better. Cost $25 a head and was HORRIBLE on the recovery. Half of them still had scurs.

Found a neighbor who does show goats and charges $5 a piece! That's the way to go!

I know my new vet does a good job b/c he did my neighbors' kids, and he even got the boys very well.

He charged me $3 each for the disbudding, and fifty cents (yes, fifty CENTS) to castrate the buckling (with the elastrator). He gave each of the kids a tetanus injection (standard procedure), which was included with the disbudding.

When I told him Trub was having difficulties letting her milk down and that she was engorged, he gave me a syringe with a dose of Predef (needle and all). It was a couple bucks.

I left his office paying $23.24. That includes 2 Pritchard nipples for the bottle kids.

Before writing the check, I made sure that the receptionist didn't forget anything.

Nope. That was it.

So, great vet, incredibly reasonable charges, AND he was very nice.

Cheaper than buying a disbudding iron, and a lot easier on me.

Our local vet wanted $80 for the farm visit (would not let me bring them in) plus $80 per hr or the protion it took to do them. I only had 3 to do at the time.

Pony, I think I want to use your vet. Maybe he could move a little south?

i just had my vet do my three yesterday. These were older kids, 6 weeks old. So it was more of a dehorning at that point. He put them under to do this since they were older. Gave them Tetnis shots and the total bill was 45.00 for all three. They look very good. When i brough them home they went straight to the feeder.
