Lets Talk Medications

Well Reading some post and different shots people give or item during both or sickness or help to bring on birth made me wonder what do you have on site or wish you could have on site in time of needs.

also a brief explantion for what it is used for would be good for other newbees such as myself.

I keep very little 'medications' on hand. Through good management, feeding, and care, prevention of most problems is possible. I can't stress the importance of prevention enough.

I do keep a little, though.

Penicillin - antibiotic
Ivermectin - wormer
Kao-Pec - stool hardener (used more on dogs/kittens than goats. )
di-methox - cocci treatment (haven't needed it yet)
CMPK gel - prevents/treats milk fever (haven't needed it yet)
Bo-Se - selenium/vitamin e supplement
activated charcoal - poison treatment (haven't needed it yet)
pig paste - iron supplement for anemics (not needed to use, yet)

I've probably got more that I'm forgetting.

I'd like to have epinephrine on hand, but my vet won't sell it to me.

I'm still very new, and honestly feel like I always will be, but I've had to deal with a few things so far, and I'm emassing my medicine chest:

CMPK- (have stuff to mix it up)
Aspirin- regular adult human stuff for pain
Vit E
Tums (calcium if needed)
CD/T
PenG (haven't used it yet)
Vet Wrap (used it on the dog )
Sulmet (used it on chickens for cocci, also supposed to work for goats for a few things)
Iodine (dipping navels, wound care)
Ivermectin- paste form, also worm my chickens with it
Blu-Kote- haven't used yet, got it for the bottle babies when I disbud

I also have tetracycline which I have used on the chickens, but personally I think it is crap as an antibio, and definitely not something thats good in an emergency.

I also like to have pedialyte on hand for emergencies, but don't have any right now. It's great if you have someone not eating and that starts getting the shakes (from electrolyte imbalance). Also good to have some other stranger stuff on hand like molasses and corn syrup, and of course baking soda.

When my disbudding iron comes in at TSC this week I'm picking up the other cd/t immun. (anti-toxin? The emergency use one)

Drugs in the cupboard/fridge:

Banamine - RX drug - short term pain reliever used for castration and nice to have on hand if anyone gets injured. Also anti-inflammatory and fever reducer, and used against respiratory infections.

LA200 - I like to have an unopened bottle all the time, as once it is opened it starts to age and becomes painful to inject. Antibiotic ideal for merits infections, pink eye & navel/joint ill. LA200 will not work on kids still fed milk.

Penicillin G - Antibiotic for everything else.

Bo-Se - RX Bovine Selenium - can't go without this one! Used before breedings, before kiddings on does, new born kids, and as an immunity booster.

Lutelyse - RX drug - I keep this on hand during kidding and breeding season 'just in case' this will dilate the does cervix and cause her to abort if bred.

Oxytocine - RX drug - I keep on hand during kidding season, this will give a doe strong contractions for about 20 min. Do NOT give unless the cervix is dilated. I have one doe who has very week contractions during kidding and occasionally won't pass afterbirth. I keep this especially for her, if I didn't have her, I probably would never need it.

Vit B Complex - good for intestines & helps stimulate appetite.

Corrid - for Cocci prevention

Albon - 12.5% - for Cocci prevention - was using this now switching to Corrid, just finishing up the last in the bottle.

Albon - 40% (same as Di-Methoox) - Cocci treatment.

Tetanus - Antitoxin & Toxoid - Toxoid to vaccinate - antitoxin just in case.

Cydectin Cattle Pour on - For worming against HC

Probios - for rumen health anytime stress levels are up.

CMPK pills - mix and make from Wal-Mart - anytime a doe needs extra calcium.

Iodine / Betadine - Disinfectant - Used on newborn kids navels and goats hoofs after trimmings.

Peroxide - Disinfectant - vet says this works best for injuries, but I've noticed it is more likely to cause scar tissue when used full strength, so generally I dilute with water sometimes the first and always the second time 'round and if still needed after.

Wound Dust - made for horses, used on any bad open cuts/wounds to cover up and help heal while keeping clean.

Want to get:

Clostridium Perfringens - for Enterotoxemia treatment - "just in case"

CD&T Vaccine for goats. We haven't vaccinated in the past, but as our herd grows in quantity and quality its something I've started looking into.

Scripts I keep are Naxcel (the main antibitoic I use), Bo-se (selenium vitamin E injection), Banamine (pain, calms the spastic gut, reduces inflammation), CMPK injectable (injectable calcium), Epi (for shock), Oxytocin ( causes uterine contractions), Lutelyse (aborts), cysterellon (the Cyst buster), Dopram (given under the tongue in kids to start them breathing) and Dex. (our most powerful steroid) Most, other than Naxcel, Bo-se and CMPK, I only have small vacutainer tubes full, since I am just 17 minutes from my vets office, enough to tide me over until I can get to the vet, but not enough to kill the pocketbook when you have to throw away drugs out of date.

I keep a 300,000 unit aqua pen, a 200 mg tetracycline and tylan 50 as OTC antibiotics. My vaccinations are CD&T, Lysigin and Pasturella pnemonia. Cocci meds, I use Corid for prevention and keep a sulfa on hand.

The rest is just normal stuff you all have...lactated ringers to be given subq, thera bloat or bloat guard, ammonium chloride, wormers, the list is huge...you simply pick stuff up as you go. vicki
