Brucellosis!?

Oh boy, one more thing to worry about. What are the odds of my little grade doe having this? Brucellosis. I'll probably ask to have her tested for this too. I'm going to need a vacation from all this sweet wholesome, fresh air and sunshine, raising some of your own food pretty soon. Sorry little break down there.

Go ahead and get your vet to test her for Bruc. and TB. While Brucella M. is not a problem in the US, the regular cattle Bruc. is around and while not likely, it would give you the ability to go from state to state with her if you have a paper trail.

We will be doing an annual TB/Bruc. testing here in late April in anticipation of going out of state in May.

Georgia is a certified and accredited TB and Brucellosis-free state. That being said, I would still test. I maintain herd certification and accreditation for the purpose of showing and export of goats.

Thanks guys. We were already planning to test for TB. Sometimes it seems like there is just another thing, and another thing, and another thing. I probably wouldn't be concerned but I want to do it right! I wanted a safe source of raw milk, so I have to be the one who makes sure it is safe.

Our vet visit is tomorrow. I'll be glad when everything is done! The vet is going to disbud Heidi too.

I don't think I'd worry unless you got her from South America. But if the test isn't too spendy, and you're really concerned, no harm in having them run it.

I have brokered hundreds if not more than a thousand goats out of the most awful conditions. You can imagine how bad of shape these goats are in by the time a dairy or a couple going through a divorce, or the death of a spouse, when they call me to come get the herd. In all these years I have never had one doe, for export tests, test positive for TB or brucella M. Perhaps if you lived in a southern state that was comingled with Mexican cattle? Maybe? Even then I bet that it would be an error on test. It's a none issue, it's a cattle dairy test that goats have to have like scrapie is for sheep and goats have to have. Vicki

Who requires at TB test or brucellosis test for interstate travel? It's not on our list to get a health certificate in Texas or Missouri.

There are some states (such as MI) that still have TB. Any goat coming from there must have a TB test.

Yep it will realistically move the nationals away from certain states. Minnesota and California for instance had to have TB whole herd tests recently. Others will allow waivers. It's why you look into the health certificate status of the state before you try to buy or sell in or out of it. Canada has made it nearly impossible to sell into, other than bucks. Vicki
