Hi guys! I'm back, and with a question! =]

Hello everyone! I'm sorry I haven't been very active lately. College keeps me pretty busy during the "school year." I just don't have as much time to post, but I do continue to lurk until summer rolls around and I can post more again.

I am taking the time to post now, though, because I need some advice. I will try to make this short. I don't have a buck of my own, so I had lined up with a local breeder [one whom I got three of my girls from] to use her bucks. However, when I tried to contact the breeder, she would never make concrete plans and she wouldn't always reply to my emails. [She says she prefers emails because of her busy work schedule.] Now, I don't think she's purposefully trying to get out of the breeding. She's really nice and I just don't think she's that kind of person. I had similar trouble before with trying to set up a time to pick up my girls when I bought them. I think she's just forgetful. I'm not assertive enough to "keep after" her, though, so none of my girls got bred this fall as I had planned.

Now one of my does that was supposed to be bred in definitely in season right now. She's flagging with her tail and my whether is trying to woo her. If I did breed her right now, she would have August babies. August in West Tennessee can be anything from warm and wet to hot and dry, or any mixture of that. I know Spring and Fall babies are preferable, but it's very tempting to try and have kids here sooner rather than later.

So, basically I have a two part question. Would you guys [especially any from TN or nearby with similar weather] risk an August kidding, or would you just mark the day she came into season and try for a September or October kidding? [I have Nigerians, so they should be able to breed year-round.] My second question is, how can I be more assertive to the breeder without being rude?

Thanks guys! Sorry this is so long...I tend to be wordy.

I wouldn't count on your does continuing to cycle through the spring. What breed do you have? I have had July kiddings before, and the does have done just fine. If you have an older doe she may get very hot being pregnant during the summer, but I have never lost a doe to late kidding. You have to be more careful about coccidia with kids born during the summer.

As she said, Nigerians.

I'd go for it. Better than skipping a year.

It gets hot here in Kansas in August but I have had August kids with no health problems. Now that I think about it, I have had August kids in Tennessee with no problems too.
I would continue to remind the breeder too. She probably has so many irons in the fire that she needs reminding and would appreciate it too.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm going to try to call the breeder tomorrow, I think. I hope that Rumor is still in heat by the time we get her over there. I didn't have time to call the breeder today. =p
