On the Fias Farm site they say they pop the bubble with a piece of straw...don't know why, but that "technique" is out there.
Can't wait to see the baby pictures!!!!!

I popped it because Fiasco Farms did! I am inexperianced so I try to follow the example of those who know a heaping whole lot more than me! I poked it with a piece of straw and it went pop. I took a little movie of it first though. Then I went up to the house and told my 2 children (9 and 11) if they were still and quite they could come and watch. So we three rushed back down to the shed. Milkyway was pushing and we could see hooves and a nose and then she laid down and we could see a little pink tung sticking out. Milkyway was hollering a little at this point. I pulled just a little on the baby's front legs and out it slid. Then I pulled the sack off its little head and started rubbing it down with a big fluffy towel. Milkyway was so sweet, just talking and licking. I let my kids take turns rubbing the new baby too. She only had a single. About an hour later she passed the placenta. We have had a memorable night.

I checked and as far as I can tell we have a little doe.:banana02: I helper her find the teat but she didn't stay on that long. We did that a couple of times. Then I milked into a plastic dixie sized cup and took the doe ling up to the house to see if she would take out of a bottle. That didn't work very well but she did get a little. We weighed her on the kitchen scale and she was a healthy 3.6 pounds. Apparently ND's average about 2 lbs at birth. But that is probably for twins or more.

We took her back to her mom who really seemed to want her back. She found the teat a couple more times but didn't seem to stay on very long. Then lay down in the straw and went to sleep. I figured she would not lay down sweetly if she were hungry. Would she cry?

Another concern I had was, Milkyway seems obsessed with the umbilical cord. I treated to a good dipping like I was supposed to, but then Milkyway kept chewing down. At least that is what it looked like. So after a while I dipped it again. When I left the shed a little while ago they were laying down, the doeling was mostly asleep, but Milkyway was still licking her belly. Is this alright. Should I dip her navel again?

I will post pics tomorrow as promised!

All normal.

Kids do touch and go on nursing, but then they figure it out when you aren't looking.

Moms lick off all the iodine. Makes you wonder why we bother, eh?

Congratulations!

They don't nurse long. Just check her belly, it should feel almost full.

How long is the cord? Is she chewing it off? She might be wanting minerals and the dip is causing her to lick the kid. I'd tie it off and not dip anymore. It is ok for her to lick it, as long as she is not causing damage, ie. bleeding or chewing the cord at the belly.
