Unhappy Shadow's dead

My big beautiful spotty buck is gone. I bought him last spring because of his bloodlines, to improve my herd. Went out today and found him dead. Can't find any reasons. He was laying as if asleep. No wounds, no blockages. He was only 5 years old. I do have 2 beautiful babies, one buckling, one doeling, and 2 does due to kid in March by him. I'm really bummed out. He was one great buck, tempramentally and in looks.

Sorry to read this!!

It seems that goats just look for a way to die. Best.

Sorry about your buck.
Are there any labs near you that do necropsies?

Thanks, and I don't know. I wouldn't be able to afford it anyway. I did the best I know how with the training I have (I'm a Vet Tech, but don't practice in a clinic any more) Everything looked like I would expect it to in comparison to the goats that I have butchered.

Awww Farmmom I remember when you got him. I am so very sorry. And a big mystery to boot. At least it sounds like he went peacefully since he looked like he was sleeping. Hugs to you This just stinks (nicer word).

My Miniature herdsire went in the EXACT same way. He was healthy, etc... no signs of imminent death at all. Had been healthy his entire life. Vaccinated, blood tested for CL, CAE, johnne's. He was eating and drinking, healthy poos, had clean dry bedding. He was such a mannerly, well trained buck, and threw nice kids.

I had a doe with him from 1-8 to 1-9 till late in the evening. I was going to take her out and he tried to breed her again (though she was now out of heat). I found him dead in his house the next afternoon, 1-10. 3 of my does took with breedings by him, two of which were his daughters and I will likely keep doelings out of, as I liked the result of the cross last year. The other is the mother of his daughters, and I will likely keep a buckling and doelings out of her. I have a new buck but I don't like him nearly as much... his back legs seem posty and he may be steep. He's FUZZY so it's hard to tell, and it doesn't help that he haunches up against the cold. My mini doelings go through stages of growth where they're awkward, too, so hopefully he's not as bad as I think. I'll have to see how he turns out. He covered my 4th doe once his test results came back clean.

So sorry you lost your pretty boy.

I read something that says that bucks don't live long because of how much breeding takes out of them-- that it weakens their hearts, so they are prone to this-- still is tragic. I hope YOU are ok-- hopefully you'll get a couple more pretty babies from him .

He was a very good looking boy Farmmom, So sorry for your loss I know it's hard when that happens especially for no reason. Our vet does necropsies here & I don't think he charges too much, maybe you could check with your vet if you really want to get one done. Was he UTD on his CD & T shots too?

So sorry about your Buck too Jillie63!
Hugs to you both!

He was UTD on *everything*. In fact, he was boostered 2 weeks ago at the same time he got copper, dewormed, feet trimmed, bo-se, etc.

Thanks all of you for your kind words. My oldest son (12) is the one that found him. He's still pretty shook up. I'm ok, just kinda bummed. I had really hoped to get at least a few good years out of him. I'll probably keep the buckling, as my new herd sire.
